It’s a strange word that we throw around a lot around here, but do you know what it means?

What exactly are these polyphenols, and even more importantly, why should they matter to you?

Let’s take a closer look…

Anatomy of a Polyphenol:

Simply put a “polyphenol” is the name of a specific kind of antioxidant found in many fruits, vegetables, spices, and tea.

These antioxidants remove free radicals from the body, and this helps to slow down cell and tissue damage (a very good thing).

Polyphenols in particular have been shown to offer a variety of potential health benefits including protection against cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even aging.

Tea Polyphenols:

All three of the primary types of tea – green, black, and oolong – naturally contain polyphenols in a readily available form.

These polyphenols vary slightly between the different kinds of tea because of differences in how the tea is processed, but all three offer a host of disease fighting benefits.

Oolong Tea Polyphenols:

So, what makes oolong tea polyphenols so special?

Well, these powerful little antioxidants that are responsible for it’s other health benefits also work in the body to boost metabolism and support weight loss by helping to block fat-building enzymes.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2001 concluded that drinking regular amounts of oolong tea not only raised metabolic rate, but also increased fat oxidation in its subjects. In all, this study showed a 12% increase in fat oxidation over a 24-hour period after drinking the tea, and an overall increase in energy expenditure (metabolism).

Another 2009 study published in the Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine reflected the same results when researching the use of oolong tea with overweight and obese subjects. They found that Oolong tea could both decrease body fat content and reduce body weight through improving metabolism and that it may help to prevent obesity.

    Your suggestion is to have 1 glass before breakfast and another before lunch.
    If I mix one cup of tea with a 16 bottle of water and sip it in about 3 hours period and then have 1 full glass of tea before lunch, it would deliver the same benefits?

    • Hi Simone,
      I suggest that you use it in whatever way works best for you. The reason we generally recommend one cup before breakfast and one before lunch is to get your metabolism charged up before you eat, but I think that drinking it throughout the morning mixed with water is also great (drinking lots of water can also help weight loss).
