You’ve probably heard that cinnamon is great for weight loss.

That’s why I’ve chosen to share this authentic recipe for Mexican Cinnamon Tea for you.

Ingredients:

  • 6 Cups Water
  • 1 Mexican Cinnamon Stick

Directions

  1. Bring water to boil and add cinnamon stick.
  2. Allow to boil for 3-5 minutes, then remove from heat.
  3. Let it cool and enjoy!  It’s that simple!

Some grocery stores have committed to going GMO-Free this decade due to mounting evidence of their inherent cancer risk.

1.  GMO’s

Genetically modified organisms, also known as GMO’s, are foods that have been modified with chemicals.

One of the biggest offenders of genetic modification is grains including wheat, but coming close are corn, sugar, and soy.

In fact, some say that the reason for Celiac Disease (and a plethora of other digestive issues that stem from gluten) are due to the genetic modification of wheat – not the wheat itself!

One main reason for genetic modification is crop yield.  

But foods are also genetically modified in order to create a product that is ‘sturdy’ enough to ship nationwide.

GMO’s are linked to birth defects, rapid tumor growth, and various diseases.

Sadly, almost all grain products have been genetically modified.

This includes soybeans, wheat and corn.

The most common “GMO” crops bear corn, soy, canola, and sugar beets.  (I’ve gone on many a rant about how Whole Foods’ prepared foods are littered with Canola Oil – it makes me NUTS!)

Here are a few practical replacements you can make:

    1. Go Grass-Fed.  Cattle that is fed corn and grain most likely consumes GMO.
    2. Replace canola oil with Coconut oil or extra-virgin Olive Oil.
    3. Find GMO-Free Corn Starch, Hominy, and Corn Tortilla Chips.
    4. GMO-Free is a hot marketing tool.  If you don’t see “100% Organic” or “GMO-Free” listed on the food, it’s best to steer clear.

Anybody who knows me understands that popcorn is pretty much my favorite food on the planet.

But when I learned that microwave popcorn is one of the WORST things you can do for your body, I promptly switched to stovetop or air-popped popcorn.

It’s really easy – I buy these awesome GMO-free kernels from Tiny But Mighty Popcorn (pictured to the right).

That’s why it’s important clear of farm-raised salmon if you’re trying to avoid cancer-causing foods!

It may look fresh in that sushi case… but unless it’s wild-caught – you don’t know what the fish have been eating, which transfers to your own body when you consume them!

While farmed salmon is high on the list of cancer-causing foods, wild salmon is equally high on the list of cancer-preventing foods!

Vitamin D is linked to prevention of several cancers, especially of the breast and colon.

This may be because Vitamin D helps to block the growth of blood vessels that feed cancerous tumors.

But wild-salmon is rich in Vitamin D naturally, helping your body fight cancerous and precancerous cells.

It’s actually really difficult to find foods that are naturally high in Vitamin D.

That’s why lots of Wild-Caught Salmon… and 20-30 minutes a day of natural sunlight! – are two of the best cancer-preventing practices you can employ.

5.  Processed Meats

If you’ve been pregnant recently, or know somebody who is, you know that pregnant women are told not to eat processed meats.

Such meats include bacon, lunch meats, sausages, baloney and hot dogs.

The reason these hit high on the list of cancer-causing foods is because processed meats are riddled with chemicals and preservatives meant to make them ‘look’ fresh (i.e. resembling the color of the animal they came from.)

One of the worst cancer-causing ingredients in processed meats are sodium nitrates.

These are preservatives that make the meat appear fresh, but is a known carcinogen.

Replace traditional processed meats with nitrate-free ones!

Replace With:  Nitrate-Free Meat…

Your local Whole Foods or Organic Market will generally stock their meat cases with nitrate-free meats.

You should also look at your bacon and jerky’s for a nitrate-free label.

Just so you know: nitrate-free meat will definitely turn colors relatively soon after the “Sell By:” date… so eat them in a reasonable time period!

6.  Non-Organic Produce…

You can’t really wash the chemicals off of fruits and vegetables that are contaminated with pesticides or fertilizers.

Apples have even been rumored to have over a 98% positive rate of environmental chemical contamination. But oranges, strawberries, grapes, and cucumbers are also big offenders.

One way to detect genetic modification in fruit is to visit a farmers market or pay attention to the size of, say, the zucchini you get conventionally and that from an organic crop.

When you go organic, you will generally have a lower yield, smaller produce, and *better taste*.  

You may not find tomatoes the size of your head, but the organic crops are generally much sweeter, too!

Replace With:  Grapefruit

Grapefruit is very powerful in the fight against cancer.

First of all, it’s loaded with Vitamin C, which helps prevent cancer-causing nitrogen compounds from forming in your body.

Plus, Vitamin C is linked to a reduced risk of stomach, colon, esophagus, bladder, breast, and cervical cancer.

Another amazing trick to getting produce that isn’t tainted with cancer-causing chemicals is to get fruits and vegetables with ‘thick skin’.

There was a time period that I couldn’t afford organic produce and lived in a town where it wasn’t popular and very hard to find.

During that period, I stuck to avocados, grapefruit, bananas, oranges, and other fruits and vegetables that must be ‘peeled’ before eating.

That’s because foods like berries, apples, cucumbers, zucchini, and leafy vegetables are especially riddled with chemicals… and it’s hard (or impossible) to remove their outer layer.

For example, I replaced a lot of my leafy greens with cabbage when organic leafy greens weren’t available.

That’s because with cabbage, I could remove the first couple layers and have a generally clean inside-portion to keep me from consuming cancer-causing chemicals.

With enough creative practice, navigating away from cancer-causing foods will become easier… AND cheaper to do!

It’s hard to believe that children eat these!

7.  Bagged Chips

I don’t even know how people allow children to eat bagged chips.

Besides being super-fatty, fried, full of too-much salt and trans fats… bagged chips are riddled with chemicals.

These include artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors… even Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in some cases!

MSG is referred to as a ‘silent killer’ found in canned foods, crackers, and even infant formula!

MSG is an excitotoxin; it literally ‘excites’ your cells to the point of damage, or death.

This can cause brain damage, learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease… and worse.

The FDA admits:

“Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and that there are glutamate-responsive tissues in other parts of the body, as well.

Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Huntington’s chorea. Injections of glutamate in laboratory animals have resulted in damage to nerve cells in the brain.”

Potato chips are also high on the list of cancer-causing foods because they’re fried at a high temperature, causing them to produce a carcinogen called acrylamide.

Acrylamide is the same carcinogen found in cigarettes!

Use Plaintains, Kale, Sweet Potatoes, and Taro Root for a healthy alternative to bagged chips!

Replace With…  Homemade Chips

It’s hard to imagine a time when people didn’t crave the crunchy, salty, oily goodness of a bag of chips.

Thankfully, there are ways to satisfy your salty craving without the trans fats, excessive sodium, and chemicals.

At home you can slice kale, sweet potato, taro root, and even plantains to make a whole rainbow of delicious healthy chips.

After reading this, you may never eat canned tomatoes again!

8.  Canned Tomatoes…

Canned foods are usually lined with a chamical called bisphenol-A, or “BPA”.  

BPA is linked to heart disease, infertility, and other diseases. 

Because acidic foods like tomatoes tend to absorb BPA into the food procuct, they’re more dangerous than, say, black beans or tuna.

In fact, it is recommended my some to AVOID feeding children food that has canned tomatoes in it.

Moreover, tomatoes are a highly acidic food.  

And acidity in the body actually helps feed cancer!

Sweet potatoes are surprisingly versatile and powerful in cancer prevention!

Replace With:  Sweet Potatoes

It’s almost impossible to find tasty fresh tomatoes save a couple short months out of the year.

What’s more, even when tomatoes are in season, they’re usually genetically modified to have a thick enough skin to travel all throughout the country.

Plus, they’re expensive.  Replacing a 28-ounce can of tomatoes would equal 1 dozen whole tomatoes.

Because finding tasty fresh tomatoes is difficult, try REPLACING tomatoes in your diet with Sweet Potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta-carotene, which is a powerful antioxidant also found in carrots and dark, leafy vegetables as well.

Beta-carotene is linked to a reduce risk of cancer, and foods high in beta-carotene have even been linked to reducing the risk of breast cancer by HALF in post-menopausal women.

Pumpkin is another amazing vegetable that you can puree and use in the place of tomatoes, as well as parsnip, roasted red peppers, and even butternut squash.

If you’re sensitive to acidity, red peppers are not the way to go.  But if you’re looking to avoid cancer-causing BPA, finding a fresh alternative to canned tomatoes will be both a challenging and exciting journey.

BONUS TIP:  Can Your Own Tomatoes…

A few years ago I became aware of the danger of BPA.

It was the end of the summer, and during that time I put an add on Craigslist requesting that people save their green or red tomatoes for me to can.

I ended up with two full recycling bins FULL of tomatoes!

Then I purchased mason jars with BPA-Free lids and began the process of peeling, boiling, and canning my own tomatoes!

This is the BEST canned tomato alternative because you can enjoy the freshness of a summer-ripe tomato all year long, PLUS you will avoid cancer-causing BPA!

9.  Fake Sugar

Fake sugars, diet sodas, and even sugarless chewing gum are all plagued with the chemical aspartame, an artificial sweetener.

You’ll also see it snuck into yogurts, ‘vitamin drinks’, and sugarless energy drinks.

It is because of aspartame that diet food has such a bad wrap!

And for good reason… Aspartame is linked to cancers, birth defects, and heart problems.

Plus, people who consume these fake sugars actually gain MORE weight!

They make you psychologically and physically dependent on a sweet flavor, they’re addictive, and they inhibit your body’s ability to guage whether or not you’ve had enough to eat.

Versatile and delicious, pomegranates are one of the world’s healthiest cancer-preventing foods!

Replace With: Pomegranates…

In order to truly kick your sugar addiction, it is recommended to spend a period of time going raw (a week or two), or fasting sugars and fake sugars in order to detoxify your body and restore your palate.

If you must use sweeteners, try Stevia or Truvia.

Although these still feel like a bandaid… as they’re nevertheless a result of ‘lab experiments’.

Try setting your thermostat as low as 60 degrees at night to help your sleep.

Or do what I tend to do: take a shower just before bed.

This will drop your core body temperature and help you get to sleep fast.

5.  Get More Exercise…

Exercising 20 to 30 minutes may help reduce the amount of time needed to fall asleep by half.

It’s better to do this early in the morning, when you’re more alert.

Plus, working out before bed will only leave you feeling pumped and make it hard to fall asleep!

1.  DO Find Low-Maintenance Workouts…

One of the hardest things for people is that they’re dependent on a gym, exercise class, or atmosphere to workout in.

In order to be able to fit in fitness no matter you are, learn how to do exercises that have a massive impact, with minimal exercise equipment.

I’ve recently written about my 6-10 favorite “independent” exercises – one here and the other here.

The best low-maintenance exercises are HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and bodyweight exercises – like the ones I linked to above.

These are easy to do when traveling, at home in your living room, and even when you find a spare 10 minutes on your hand in between walking the dogs, making dinner, or phone calls for work!

I get in flow when I run.  Others when they dance, do yoga, lift weights, or bicycle.

…being completely involved in an activity for its own sake.  The ego falls away.  Time flies.  Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz.  Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.

3. DO Make It Important…

Some people treat working out like going to the dentist.  They dread it.

But it isn’t the workout they hate… it’s the fact that they haven’t prioritized it in their schedules.

Would you leave your child waiting at the curb all night?  Would you go without eating for days?  No.

But workouts don’t often take such precedence in our lives.

However, think about how much MORE work you’ll accomplish when your body and mind are in tip-top shape.

Then think of all the health bills you will avoid because of your working out.

Imagine the working out will improve your professional life, your family, even your sex life.

4.  DO Let yourself Get Away With “Less”…

If I’m driving you crazy with this lately, that’s because it’s such a strong belief I have.

When I was a child, our television flashed images of starving children all over the world.

Their gaunt little faces and toothpick arms haunted my childhood, and I spent some time in my 20’s in ministry to underprivileged people in the U.S. and the world.

Soon after I left ministry, a new image of what underprivileged looked like stood in my mind: rather than a gaunt, emaciated, starving person…

I now saw the ‘poor’ as being overweight, diabetic, and very sick.

Now that developing countries have access to processed foods… and much more than they need; they’re becoming obese.

As it turns out… this may be the world’s new silent killer.  I’ll explain why.

A Growing Epidemic…

When you see people who are overweight, you intuitively know that they are sick.

But did you know that the number of obese people in developing countries has tripled in the past 30 years?

Even countries like Mexico, hailed for it’s plethora of natural resources, now has the highest percentage of obese adults in the world.

A researcher from the ODI claims that if people continue to eat like people in the US or UK do, “…we would need several planets to cope with the consequences.”

Some even call the epidemic “over-nutrition”.  I don’t really like to think that we can have too much nutrition.  I rather think of it as over-MAL-nutrition.

Other experts might call it “wheat belly” or “sugar overload”.

Whether it’s wheat, sugar, fat, or meat consumption… something “big” is happening in our world, and it’s contributing to the #1 reason for premature death worldwide.

Policymakers, non-profits, and rockstar charitable organizations don’t usually focus on malnutrition and obesity.

This may be because the fight against HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis are a bit more sensational.

But if people aren’t going to willingly wake up to the obesity epidemic, do policymakers intervene?

It’s hard to suggest policy around something so personal as food and diet, so that doesn’t seem plausible either.

So where is the hope in this matter?

Well, here are two examples of countries successfully fighting the obesity epidemic.

1.  In South Korea, aggressive social marketing and education has prevented this nation from the obesity epidemic.

2.  Finland went from having the world’s highest coronary mortality rate to a decrease by 65% when they worked with the World Health Organization to promote healthier diets and lifestyles.

Plus, food at farmers’ markets are often some of the healthiest, more purely organic foods you can find!

3.  Forage…

When you hunt, pick, or grow your own food, you learn to appreciate where your food comes from.

Plus, foraging for food guarantees that it’s not-processed!

4.  Shop The Perimeter…

Just don’t go outside of the perimeter.

Make a game of it.  Challenge yourself to only shop for whole foods without boxes, jars, bottles, or plastics of any kind.

It’s fun to try to replace sugar or candied fruits with whole foods, fruits, or other creative things.

Plus, if your family doesn’t see the Breyer’s Ice Cream or Cheeri-O’s, they’re less likely to crave them.

5.  Learn To Cook Your Favorite Meal…

Meal planning is awesome… but it takes a *lot* of discipline!

One thing that can be incredibly helpful is to learn how to cook your favorite meal in a healthy way with no processed foods, 100% organic, and ideally low in sugar and carbs.

How To Do A Burpee…

If I told you that there’s a workout I have started doing in place of a whole hour of cardio, would you believe me?

When I first heard about this workout, I heard tales of crazy cross-fit extremists doing these until they threw up…

But these exercises are so appealing because they give you a full-body workout and are believed to burn 50% MORE calories than a regular strength-training workout!

So what did I do?  Naturally – I tried it for myself!

Oh, boy – has it changed my life!

The Best Full-Body Workout I’ve Ever Done…

This workout is called none other than the ‘Burpee’.

Burpees are:

  • Equipment-free
  • Full-Body workout
  • Cardiovascular
  • Strengthening

They  target the muscles in your upper arms, chest, hamstrings, abs, and thighs.  WHOA!

Burpees are also known as ‘squat thrusts’.

And let me tell you – they’re incredibly difficult…. and REALLY fun!

Regularly people ask me how I get my strong arms and toned legs.

And because approximately 25% of my workouts are sets of this tough little oddly-named exercise, I thought I’d share it with you today!

When I first started doing burpees, I’d do one minute of burpees at a comfortable pace and then rest for one minute.

Perhaps I’d do 3 sets.

Now I’ve worked up to a full 100 burpees in about 12 minutes.  Generally I do them in sets of 15 or 20.

And then I’m done.

Just 12 minutes of burpees has replaced an entire hour of running in my workout routine!

How To Do A Burpee…

I hate reading descriptions of workouts, so here’s a cool little sketch tutorial I created for you:

Burpees

1.  First, start in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart.

2.  Next, drop to a squatting position with each of your hands on the ground.

3.  Now kick your feet backwards and lower yourself to the ground to a pushup position, but don’t push back up.

4.  Now kick your feet back into the squatting position while your arms are straightened out.

5.  Jump as high as you can.  Then return to standing position for step 1 again.

** WARNING: Burpees are a really intense workout that you should work up to slowly and carefully!

Three Best Burpee Alternatives…

You may not be ready in either muscle strength or cardio strength for a burpee.

But that’s okay!

Here are three things you can do to work up to them…

1.  Squats

Squats

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees until your seat is nearly at the height of your heels.

This is a great exercise to tone your thighs and butt.

Start by trying to do 10 squats per day and work yourself up to as many as 100 or more!

I try to do squats twice per week on days I don’t jog or run.

2.  Pushups

I truly have some of the strongest arms of any gal I know.

My secret?

Almost every day I do 40 pushups before I leave the house for a social event or for work.

Originally this started as a way to pump me up because of my social anxiety.

Now it has become a healthy practice I use to stay in tip-top shape!

Start with 10 per day and work up to a number that feels good for you.

I do pushups at least 3 days per week and am complimented almost daily on my incredibly fit arms.  People are shocked when they find out that I haven’t used an exercise machine since high school!

3.  Box Jumps

Box Jumps

Box jumps burn tons of calories and make your legs super strong.

If you don’t have gym access, you can use steps, playgrounds, park benches, or other stable objects you find around the garage or house.

Plus, box jumps help you strengthen your hips, which will help you avoid hip problems when you get older.

What’s more, they make you feel like a little kid again – they’re really fun!

I haven’t always been healthy and fit.

Rows are a pulling exercise that help you improve posture and balance in the body.

And if you’re looking to firm up your upper body for tank top season, this is just the exercise for you!

You can do upright rows or bended rows.

Upright rows are simple, pull your arms up just until your hands are just under your shoulder caps.

For bended rows, bend over slightly and don’t hunch your shoulders.

While keeping them tucked into your side, pull your elbows back.

Be sure to keep your torso straight without twisting, as this can lead to back soreness or even injury.

 

2.  PLANKS

You’re pretty much just holding yourself in place for a minute or two…

Sideways and Forward Planks

Well… that’s not the entire story.

You see, planks are incredible for your core muscles, i.e. your tummy.

The big thing you must do with planks is keep straight as a board – i.e. resist twisting or flexing in any way.

This bodyweight exercise is also great for strengthening back muscles that support your lower spine.

You can do planks forward, sideways, or even while using exercise balls and dumbbells!

 

3.  SQUATS

In case you haven’t noticed, squats are a bit of a ‘trendy’ Instagram exercise right now.

I first tried to do squats on vacation one time when I didn’t have time to hit a gym or take a jog.

…And like a crazy woman I did 100 of them.  Cold.  After not having done squats for about 10 years.

Needless to say, I struggled to walk for a week!

If you’re going to do squats, work your way up to the high numbers.

You’ll want to grab dumbbells or a kettle ball once they start getting too easy.

I’d start with just weightless squats and work your way from 20 squats by adding just five more per day.

Trust me, it adds up quickly!  And you’ll really start to see your thighs and butt firm up! 

4.  REVERSE WOOD CHOPS

You can use a cable, exercise ball, or even a heavy purse for this exercise.

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.

Take your heavy object and move like you’re dropping it to the side, keeping your feet steadily in place.

Then make the movement of lifting the object from the ground to a shelf on the opposite side of your body.  You may repeat 10-15 times and try to do three sets; working up to a weight that is comfortable for you.

If you don’t have a kettlebell, try a purse with cans in it or a cable that’s attached to something low to the ground.

Beware: I’m one of the strongest, most in-shape people I know and I barely make it through 3 sets of 15 reps with a 20lb weight.

These may look easy – but they’re pretty intense!

5.  BRIDGES

Bridges are a must-have exercise for your abs, hips, butt, and lower back.

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart.

Lift your butt off the floor while pushing with your heels.

Squeeze your glutes and abs and hold for a few seconds.  Then take a few seconds to slowly go back to the floor.

There are a ton of different spins on this exercise, including putting your hands up or even raising one knee.
