And, frankly, it really disgusts me when I read about teas, foods, and even children’s’ formulas that are full of toxic ingredients, chemicals, and GMO’s.
But every once in a while you can find a silver lining in the war against toxic foods…
Case in point:
Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) stated that partially hydrogenated oil, or “trans fats”, may be banned from use in food items – or at least strictly regulated.
This means that the FDA has finally admitted that trans-fats are toxic… and if they continue to act like they’re ‘safe’, people will continue to get very sick…
What are trans-fats, and why are they so bad for you?
When liquid oils are hydrogenated, they turn into solid fats.
While this increases the shelf-life of food, it is also linked to blocking veins and arteries because they don’t easily EXPIRE from your body!
In order to really fight coronary heart disease – the FDA commissioner Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg suggested lowering the average consumption of trans-fats.
Dr. Hamburg sees this lowering of trans-fat consumption as the direct blueprint to preventing at least 20,000 MORE heart attacks and 7,000 NEW cases of heart disease each year.
Food manufacturers, in light of this development, are removing trans-fats from many common household foods.
Here are the TOP 5 trans-fat offenders as reported by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
CSPI successfully campaigned for trans-fats to be labeled on Nutrition Labels in 2006, a move that increased public awareness – and the overall freedom to choose NOT to consume these terrible toxins.
It has been reported that Burger King’s Whopper and Long John Silver’s breaded Clam Strips can possess between 1 and 7 grams of artificial trans-fats per serving.
Long John Silver has stated that they intend to boot the trans-fats out to sea.
But Burger King is stating that the trans-fats found in their foods may derive from the meat and dairy that they use to create the food.
Whatever Burger King claims – there is nothing natural about artificial trans-fats.
This is a hard one for me – I LOVE microwave popcorn and used to eat it almost daily when I was in college (… and for about ten years beyond…)
The CSPI comes to the consumer’s rescue again – reporting that Jolly Time Blast-o-Butter and Pop Secret Premium Butter Popcorn may have up to 5 grams of trans-fats per serving.
To satisfy your salty cravings – try getting an air-popper or even using some oil and popping corn on the stove.
It’s easier and SO much tastier than bagged popcorn! Not to mention heart-healthier!
As you can imagine – frozen desserts were LOADED with trans-fats.
Thanks to consumer advocates lobbying, and the FDA cracking down on trans-fats, this isn’t quite the case anymore.
However there are still a few naughty lingering sweets out there.
In fact, one slice of Sara Lee’s Classic NY Style Cheesecake can still contain 3 grams of trans-fats.
Remember: always read your labels!
I’ve never been a baker, and for a quick, last-minute birthday treat I used to be notorious for finding the Pillsbury Funfetti boxes and passing them off as treats to my family.
Not any more!
Now we find that Keebler’s Ready Crust Mini Graham Cracker Pie Crust contains 2 full grams of trans-fats per serving.
Betty Crocker’s Pie Crust Mix also contains about 2.5 grams of trans fats.
Don’t forget the frosting! Pillsbury’s Creamy Supreme Chocolate Fudge frosting can have up to 1.5 grams of trans-fats too.
So when you’re looking for a frosty, sweet treat – read your label! (And use fresh, non-artificial ingredients!)

I recently spoke with the founder of Glaucus Research Group and was sickened about what I learned… especially because I have devoted my life to health-regenerating tea products that are pesticide-free.
However, perhaps like you, I even I used to drink a different “grocery store” tea for everything.

However, Glaucus found that one of their most popular teas contained 23 different pesticides!
In fact, 77% of the teas tested would fail E.U. pesticide import standards, and 62% contained a pesticide called endosulfan; which has been banned in 144 countries because it may harm fertility, or even babies in the womb!
You may think that the quality of the product is consistent with it’s packaging…
Like those fancy, silky, pyramid-shaped tea bags that just look so darn appealing.
BEWARE: many of these bags aren’t made of silk… they’re made of *plastic*.

If you’re anything like me, you enjoy cooking the freshest, most in-season foods whenever you can.
That’s one of many reasons I love to cook sweet potatoes during November and December – when they’re in peak season.
Did you know there are almost 4 hundred varieties of sweet potatoes?
They can be pink, orange, yellow, cream, and even purple!
They can be round like potatoes or scrunched on the ends. And when you hear an orange-colored root vegetable called a “yam”, this is actually a sweet potato.
Sweet potatoes are sinfully delicious and wildly nutritious; but did you know that sweet potatoes are actually a fantastic food for weight loss, too?
Sweet potatoes are nature’s leaders in beta-carotene content.
Studies also suggest they raise our bodies’ vitamin A levels. In fact, one sweet potato has up to 438% of our daily value of Vitamin A!
In order to absorb all of sweet potato’s beta-carotene, it’s important to use 3-5 grams of fat per sweet potato meal!
Sweet potatoes taste like dessert, but are surprisingly low in calories (approximately 102 calories per serving.)

Sweet potatoes also increase the presence of the protein hormone adiponectin in the blood for Type 2 diabetics.
This hormone is created by our fat cells.
It modifies insulin metabolism; and if you have low levels of adiponectin, this is generally because of poorly-regulated insulin metabolism or insulin insensitivity.
2 cloves garlic
1 yellow onion
1 tsp. Coconut Oil
1 Large Sweet Potato
1 Granny Smith Apple
Salt & Pepper to taste
INSTEAD of coconut oil; I sautéed my onion and garlic in oil that came from a bone marrow broth soup I’ve had simmering for nearly three full days on my stove. It tastes phenomenal.
Then I added the sweet potatoes in 1-inch cubes and let simmer on low for approximately 30 minutes. It was just tender enough to be enjoyed, but also because of very sporadic stirring, had nice brown edges on the sweet potatoes.
At the 30-minute mark I added sliced granny smith apples and allowed to simmer on low another 15 minutes before serving.
If you want to add one of the world’s most perfect foods to one of the world’s most perfect vegetables: scramble some eggs and mix them in with your stir-fried sweet potatoes.

Why are so many people who avoid fat some of the most overweight people I know?
Scientists have been researching this seemingly paradoxical trend of a society obsessed with low-fat foods that nevertheless continues to gain girth.
Here’s what they found:
I’ll never forget living in France about 10 years ago and watching women walk around with baguette sandwiches loaded with fatty meats and cheeses; cooking everything with gratuitous amounts of butter, and generally looking very thin and healthy!
This is due in part to a more mobile lifestyle – people generally walk more places in European countries.
But there’s an actual term for this: “The French Paradox”. This is a phrase used to reference the incredibly low incidence of coronary heart disease in France (in relation to the high-fat diets that are common.)
But did you know that most European countries also have many fewer deaths due to heart disease… despite their ‘high-fat’ diets? [British Journal of Nutrition, 2012]
There is a clear paradoxical relationship between fat consumption and heart disease deaths accross Europe.
The National Center for Health Statistics charted the shocking fact that obesity has risen dramatically since the precise time the Low-Fat Dietary Guidelines were published in the U.S in 1977. And they continue to rise every year.
Why is this? Well, most likely it’s because many times people are replacing animal fats and oils with things like sugar. This is a recipe for disaster!

I swiped this recipe from my close friend Danette May, who is an awesome Nutritionist, Personal Trainer, and Figure Competitor, and comes up with tasty and healthy recipes for her whole family to enjoy.
2 balls = 3 oz. protein, 1 tbsp fat, 1/4 cup carbs
Makes approximately 25 balls
Preparation time: 7 minutes
* 1 cup almond butter or natural peanut butter (or try both mixed half and half)
* 1/4 cup honey (raw, if you can find it)
* 3 cups dry oatmeal (pulverize dry oats in a blender or coffee grinder first, which helps form a cookie dough texture in the final balls)
* 2-3 scoops vanilla or chocolate whey protein
* 1/3 cup water
*Optional: For added flavor, you can add 1/2 cup of coconut or dark choc chips or cacoa nibs (70% or higher chocolate chips for less sugar)
Mix together in a bowl and then roll into 1-inch balls. Eat a couple right away or freeze for an on-the-go treat anytime!
