How To Eat Carbs And STILL Lose Weight…

Carbs are a scary word when you’re trying to lose weight.

Either you’re afraid of them – which gives them undue power over your mind and body.  Or you are scared to live without them – which means you may have an addiction to carbs or sugar.

Well it’s funny.  In recent years I’ve become obsessed with finding easy food ‘tricks’ to allow me to enjoy the foods I love without suffering the effect on my thighs later.

I’ve overcome my fear of carbs, and especially my fear of fats.

Here are 3 of the tricks I swear by to keep my body tight, lean, and fit all year round…

1.  Don’t Eat Carbs By Themselves…

I don’t down a bag of pretzels when I’m too busy to grab lunch.

Nor do I opt for a ‘low-fat’ poppyseed muffin at Starbucks to avoid the fatty plate of cheeses and meats in the case.

I’d go for the meat and cheese plate because it won’t spike my insulin levels… and I stay fuller, longer!

Plus, low-fat foods are often full of sugar, carbs, and nasty chemicals.

So the cheese and meat plate may be a better option than the poppyseed muffin.  It will have similar calorie count, but less carbs, less sugar, and less insulin-spike!

Plain bagel?  Just because you cut the cream cheese doesn’t make it okay!  Try having half the bagel and some high-protein or vegetable alongside your meal.

Many fruits and vegetables are high in fiber which makes you feel more full after eating them.  Instead of toast and bagels, try just having eggs and greens or eggs with lentils or quinoa.

For weight loss, you will often find that high-FAT foods are much better for you than low-fat, high carb foods!  When you eat high-carb foods by themselves, they spike your insulin levels and turn into sugar in your body.

Foods with MORE fat help you feel fuller longer.  In fact, many people who have a high-fat diet experience hours – even up to 36 hours at a stretch, feeling satiated with no hunger pains!  You should ask your doctor before doing any fasting, of course.

Some of my favorite high-fat foods for weight loss include:

  • Hemp Seeds
  • Chia Seeds
  • Fresh (not farm-raised) Salmon
  • Raw Walnuts or Almonds

But above all, the #1 reason high-fat foods are good for your weight loss goal is that they don’t spike your blood sugar!

2.  Mix Protein In With Carbs…

To lose weight, it’s important that you pair your carbs with protein.  Ditch half your plate of pasta and focus on seeds, nuts, fish, chicken or beef with your meal.

When you have variety in your meals, you actually slow down the rate at which sugar is released into your blood.  Plus, protein causes you to release the hormone glucagon.  Glucagon fights fat AND the insulin rush you’d normally get eating carbs by themselves.

Replacing carbohydrates with meat, eggs, nuts, seeds, and greens is the way to go.  And don’t worry if you aren’t a meat-eater.  Did you know that vegetables have more protein per gram than animal meat!  To pack in the most vegetables, try blending them in your blender or juicing them.

You can add chia seeds to your coffee, replace toast with Canadian Bacon, or even replace croutons with raw nuts on a salad!

3.  Drink Slimming Tea BEFORE You Eat Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner

Unless you’re on a temporary crash diet, carbs WILL be a part of your daily life.

But you must avoid consuming more calories than you need to; the mindless munching mode; or carb cravings.  Your body isn’t satiated so you keep consuming more and more calories without ever feeling full.

Carbs are so dangerous to your healthy diet plan!  (Pretzels are my weakness.  Also popcorn, cous-cous, chicken noodle soup… aiy-yai-yai!)  You get the point.

How "Cheat Meals" Can Help You LOSE Weight…

It’s Not Cheating If You Play By THESE Rules…

We all do it.  And if you’re anything like me, it usually happens on the weekends…

I’m talking about “cheating”. Not cheating on your partner – cheating on your weight loss plan.

Perhaps it’s ice cream, pasta alfredo from your favorite Italian restaurant, or – as my husband and I discovered last night- the warm comfort and joy of a buttery homemade chicken pot pie.

Well I’m here to put the myth of cheating to bed.  That’s right – you can still eat delicious, rich, fatty and salty foods and lose weight.  I did it, and so can you.

Here are my top 4 tips to beat the ‘cheat’ food guilt and weight gain…

1.  Reframe Your Brain…

Cheating is the act of dishonesty in order to get ahead in a game.  Cheating on your weight loss plan implies that you are cheating your body in the game of health.

Instead of looking at cheating as a negative thing, look at your overindulgence as a well-deserved treat. Or even a reward!

That’s right, take the word “cheating” out of your vocabulary.  Right now.

You are more powerful than the foods you eat.  They do not control you.  So don’t give them names like ‘mistress’ or ‘cheat foods’.  Rather call them treats, or even indulgences.  Calling them cheat foods elevates them too much in your mind.

Once you take the power away from your bagel and cream cheese or ice cream sundae, you can set new rules for the game.

Here are a few of the ‘rules’ I set in my own personal “health game”.

  1. Enjoy ice cream periodically, but never eat the low-fat kind.  It’s usually full of sugar – which is much worse for your body than fat from cream.  I try to stick to organic, full-fat, low sugar ice cream when I choose to reward myself with a dessert treat.
  2. Go ahead and have a pasta meal, but stick to gluten-free quinoa pasta, or replace noodles with zucchini noodles, sweet potato noodles, or another delicious noodle alternative that doesn’t have carbs, nor gluten.  Now I can enjoy rich, meaty, hearty tomato sauce without the extra empty calories and carbs from pasta!
  3. Keep salty snack hacks on-hand.  I am a sucker for popcorn, beef jerky, and mixed nuts.  But instead of microwave popcorn (eew!  read about how terrible microwave popcorn is here.), roasted nuts, or processed nitrate-ridden beef jerky, I get jerky from US Wellness Meats that’s free from chemicals and stick to raw nuts.  Periodically I’ll spray a bit of oil on them and some salt if I’m really having a salty snack attack.  But by eliminating the processed foods from my plan, my snack attack is much healthier!

2.  Don’t Panic!

This is one of the most important things you can learn: when you cheat, don’t panic!    First of all, you aren’t likely going to gain weight from a single fattening meal or one night of too much wine.

…But the stress you put on your body will cause you to store fat and spike cortisol levels!  Healthy eating is a marathon, not a sprint.

And a healthy lifestyle is NOT a diet – your goal is to live healthy for the rest of your life.   The problem with a diet is that you restrict things that you love and live a life of denial.   Instead of living in constant denial, allow yourself little rewards along the way.  This way you will NEVER diet, but you will ALWAYS live a balanced life with a few indulgences along the way!

They’re not FAIR to you.  You are so incredible and your choice to watch what you eat and drink to live a longer, happier, healthier life is marvelous.  Congratulations to you!

Why Additives “Add” Pounds… and Endanger Your Health!

A researcher from the ODI claims that if people continue to eat like people in the US or UK do, “…we would need several planets to cope with the consequences.”

Some even call the epidemic “over-nutrition”.  I don’t really like to think that we can have too much nutrition.  I rather think of it as over-MAL-nutrition.

Other experts might call it “wheat belly” or “sugar overload”.

Whether it’s wheat, sugar, fat, or meat consumption… something “big” is happening in our world, and it’s contributing to the #1 reason for premature death worldwide.

There’s nothing more sad than seeing a young child’s life consumed with being overweight, or even diabetic.

The American Center for Disease Control reports the following:

      • Obesity in children aged 6-11 has DOUBLED in the past 30 years.
      • Adolescent obesity (age 12-19) has QUADRUPLED in the past 30 years.
      • Childhood obesity increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012.
      • Adolescent obesity increased from 5% to nearly 21% from 1980 to 2012.
      • In 2012, more than 1 out of three children & adolescents were overweight or obese.


Why Policymakers Don’t Talk About The World’s #1 Killer…

Policymakers, non-profits, and rockstar charitable organizations don’t usually focus on malnutrition and obesity.

This may be because the fight against HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis are a bit more sensational.

But if people aren’t going to willingly wake up to the obesity epidemic, do policymakers intervene?

It’s hard to suggest policy around something so personal as food and diet, so that doesn’t seem plausible either.

So where is the hope in this matter?

Well, here are two examples of countries successfully fighting the obesity epidemic.

1.  In South Korea, aggressive social marketing and education has prevented this nation from the obesity epidemic.

2.  Finland went from having the world’s highest coronary mortality rate to a decrease by 65% when they worked with the World Health Organization to promote healthier diets and lifestyles.

There’s really no way to tell if the obesity epidemic will have a natural correction, just as any global market…

… Or if it’s a problem serious enough that policymakers will have to step in before it gets much worse…

What Can YOU Do To Fight Obesity In Your Family…

There are a lot of things you can do to fight obesity one very special person at a time… with your own family.

Here are my top 7 suggestions for you.

1.  Start A Garden…

It’s very exciting to grow your own veggies, herbs, or even raise chickens!

Plus, you aren’t likely to pile fresh basil or zucchinis on top of cheesy nachos; taking care of a garden often causes you to eat healthier, whole foods!

2.  Go To A Farmers’ Market…

If you don’t have the yard, or the time for a garden, you can take advantage of others’.

You’ll notice that the artisans and farmers are more than eager to tell you about why their food is nutritious, and delicious.

Plus, food at farmers’ markets are often some of the healthiest, more purely organic foods you can find!

3.  Forage…

When you hunt, pick, or grow your own food, you learn to appreciate where your food comes from.

Plus, foraging for food guarantees that it’s not-processed!

Shop The Aisles To Avoid Processed Foods Which Lead To Weight Gain

4.  Shop The Perimeter…

Just don’t go outside of the perimeter.

Make a game of it.  Challenge yourself to only shop for whole foods without boxes, jars, bottles, or plastics of any kind.

It’s fun to try to replace sugar or candied fruits with whole foods, fruits, or other creative things.

Plus, if your family doesn’t see the Breyer’s Ice Cream or Cheeri-O’s, they’re less likely to crave them.

5.  Learn To Cook Your Favorite Meal…

Meal planning is awesome… but it takes a *lot* of discipline!

One thing that can be incredibly helpful is to learn how to cook your favorite meal in a healthy way with no processed foods, 100% organic, and ideally low in sugar and carbs.

Is There Really Such A Thing As a “Fat Gene”?

I grew up thinking there was a nasty, evil bug implanted in certain ‘unlucky’ women that made them fat.

Women in my family told me that we had the ‘fat gene’.

As you can imagine, I felt doomed and it marred my childhood… and many of my early adult years.

I was filled with fear and hopelessness; and as a little girl I assumed that I, too, had the “fat gene”.

No matter how many sports I did or how healthily I ate; I would get fat and feel miserable, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I was dead wrong.

What was this ‘fat gene, and why did I fear it for so long?

There’s No Such Thing As A “Fat Gene”…

When my family told me that we had the fat gene, what they were referring to was the simple fact that they weren’t built like 6 foot tall members of the Swedish Bikini Team.

We’re all generally short, curvy, and we most certainly don’t have the luxury of eating whatever we want without gaining weight.

But in some cases, women in my family did discover that they did, in fact, have one specific disorder: hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

The thyroid is a real gland that has real effects on women, and occasionally on men, too.

Hypothyroidism does NOT mean you’re doomed to be fat.

…But it does mean that there are specific things you can do to keep your body in it’s best possible shape.

First, it’s education.

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that produces a hormone which regulates body temperature, metabolism and heartbeat.

In the absence of sound knowledge, my family called it our ‘fat gene’ and used it as an excuse for why everybody seemed to be overweight.

What I found, however, was that scientists believe that in women over 35, chances of thyroid disorder are extremely high – even up to 30% or more!

And sadly, women suffer thyroid problems about 10 times as much as men.

Perhaps this is why people lied to me as a little girl and said that the women in my family had a ‘fat gene’.

What Happens When You Have A Thyroid Disorder…

If you have a sluggish thyroid, the little butterfly-shaped gene in the back of your neck doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.

If you have hyperthyroidism (vs. hypo), well as you can imagine, this means you produce too much thyroid hormone.

While thyroid imbalance is linked to genetics, it can also go haywire due to an autoimmune attack, pregnancy, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or even toxins in your environment.

A few things that happen to your body as a result of imbalanced thyroid are:

  • Fatigue…

Fatigue is most commonly found in hypothyroidism.

I used to wake up tired after 9 hours of sleep.  That’s when I knew I might have a thyroid problem…

  • Depression…

If you’re feeling particularly blue, you may have hypothyroidism.

That’s because hypothyroidism actually impacts your brain’s ‘happy’ chemical, Serotonin.

  • Anxiety…

Hyperthyroidism is likely to make you feel anxious.

Your whole body is flooded with too much thyroid hormone, which makes you feel ‘hyper’.  It also causes your metabolism to work out of control.

  • Increase or Decrease of Appetite…

Hyperthyroidism can cause you to feel hungry all the time, probably because your metabolism is revving as fast as a racecar.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, may alter with your sense of taste and smell.

  • Mental Fog…

When you’re suffering from a thyroid imbalance, you may feel a bit fuzzy in the brain.

That’s because too much thyroid hormone and make it hard to concentrate; you’re feeling hyper.

Hypothyroidism causes the opposite; lethargy, fatigue, forgetfulness, and fogginess.

  • Constipation

You’ve tried laxatives, herbs, hot water, prunes… but you’re bloated and constipated all the time.

This may be a symptom of hypothyroidism because your slow thyroid also slows down digestion.

  • High Blood Pressure…

My mother found out about her hypothyroidism when she learned her blood pressure was through the roof.

Hypo and hyperthyroidism can manifest high blood pressure.

In fact, those with hypothyroidism are three times more likely to develop hypertension!

  • Neck Pain…

Sore neck?  It may not be due to all that time you’re playing Angry Birds on your phone.

Rather, it may be thyroid swelling.

Look in a hand-mirror and drink a gulp of water.

If you see bulges or protrusions in the thyroid area, just below your Adam’s apple, it may be best to go see a doctor.

  • Weight Gain…

Weight gain can be caused from a plethora of things – some good, like putting on muscle, and some bad – like carrying excess water weight.

Weight gain, however, is one of the primary reasons people have their thyroids checked with a doctor.

If you notice that you’re gaining weight without any measurable change to your diet, you may have an underactive thyroid.

If you notice that you’re losing weight without big dietary changes, this may be an overactive thyroid.

  • Hair Loss…

One majorly scary symptom of hypothyroidism is a loss of hair.

Your slow system from an under-active thyroid actually puts your hair follicles in ‘resting’ mode, not growing new hair!

  • High Cholesterol…

Hypothyroidism can be linked to elevated levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

High levels of LDL cholesterol can beget heart problems, and even heart failure.

*Hypothyroid and hyperthyroidism are serious afflictions that you want to be sure to diagnose with your doctor and treat immediately.

What Can You Do If You Think You Have Hypo or Hyperthyroidism?

1.  Get Tested

If you believe that you are suffering from an underactive or overactive thyroid, please get tested with your doctor.

You may choose a holistic doctor or a traditional doctor to have your hormone levels tested.

2.  Respect Your Natural Energy Levels

In order to really pick up on what your body is throwing down, try to cut caffeine and sugar from your diet.

Instead of a caffeinated beverage, drink Slimming Tea.

Try taking a walk outside, or if you live in an area with trails you can go for a hike.

Get a dog – or a cat.  Ride your bike to work.  Get a maid for chores that make you angry.  Get a different perspective on chores that would normally infuriate you.  I’ve begun listening to audio books when I do the dishes, which makes the chore turn into a relaxing, positive experience.

Is A Slice of Wheat Toast Worse Than a Snickers Bar?

This morning I was jogging with the puppies and listening to a fascinating health and fitness book on my iPhone.

And I heard a pretty shocking fact!

The author questioned the reader to choose which of the following would cause the highest spike in blood sugar:

  • A tablespoon of pure white sugar.
  • A Snickers bar.
  • A banana.
  • A slice of whole wheat bread.

Which one would you choose?

I might get cheeky and choose the banana.  But most people would choose the Snickers Bar, right?!

But the answer is the last one you’d guess: the slice of whole wheat bread. 


When you consider how blood sugar spikes after eating particular foods (called the Glycemic Index), the items I mention break down like this:



What Is The Glycemic Index… And Why Do I Care?

The Glycemic Index (GI) in is a measure of how fast a food raises blood sugar levels.

Glucose has a GI of 100, and if a food has a GI of 50, it raises your blood sugar half as much as glucose.

Table sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose.

As people concerned with long, disease-free and healthy lives, we avoid sugar when possible.

That’s because when too much sugar is consumed, your body’s natural insulin response can become overused and weakened, even resistant.

The Results of Too Much Sugar…

Excess sugar can cause metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, and even heart disease.

And if you eat processed foods or bottled beverages – you are likely consuming enough sugar per serving to spike your insulin levels to the moon.

Why does merely 3 beers in one night effect your waistline, and your energy levels as much as, say, 15 would when you were 21 years old?

This may be due to your body’s weakened ability to process sugars, or insulin resistance.

And when you have a weakened insulin response, you store sugars as FAT.

Plus, sugar can make you resistant to the hormone leptin in the same way it becomes resistant to insulin.

Instead of RAISING your metabolic rate when you eat foods, your brain misses the signal that you are full.

And it goes into fat-storing versus energy-burning mode!

 What Can I Do?

There are a few things you can do with this information.

1.  If you have any old Food Pyramids lying around the house: TRASH ‘EM.

The moment the government stuck it’s two-sense into our diets – the low-fat diet craze hit the country.

And then the country got fat.  And overrun with heart disease.  And diabetes.

The shift to a whole-grain based diet served merely to spike our collective blood sugars.

2.  Consume Foods With Lower GI

I’m not talking about Atkins, Paleo, Inuit, Werewolf, or any other kind of special diet.

But I would strongly encourage you NOT to make whole grains… and especially not sugary foods the foundation of your personal food pyramid.

In fact, did you know that when you eat foods that spike your blood sugar, the easier it will be for your body to resist insulin; thereby storing sugars as fats?

Worse yet, your brain doesn’t realize you’re full!

So you keep eating more and more because your brain isn’t picking up what your stomach is throwing down.

I Just Ate The Best Meal Of My Life…

Last night some friends took me out for what was literally the best meal of my entire life.

I enjoyed a rare (yes, I said rare) filet from an amazing chophouse in Dallas where my husband and I are on business.

It was that simple.  Grass fed beef and mushrooms.  No veggies, no salad… no appetizer.  Nothing green, leafy, juiced, dehydrated, or otherwise fitness-flared.

Now, I very, very rarely get steak…

When I do, I only want to eat grass-fed beef: hormone-free, super healthy, organic, no grains.

And at this delicious restaurant, I was able to enjoy beef from a local ranch here in Texas.

How To Find Delicious Grass-Fed Beef

It’s not hard to find grass fed beef.

Tons of farms and ranches sell their meat from “Grass-Fed Cows”.

I fall for it – and avoid any beef that isn’t labeled ‘grass-fed’.

But did you know that not all grass fed beef is being advertised properly?

I’ve been doing some digging, and I found out that while almost all cattle eat grass… not ALL cattle die on grass.

That’s right – some cattle eat grass and then die eating GRAINS.

That’s because the grains fatten up the cows and produce the marbled type beef that people just love.

So if you’re avoiding grains; avoid ‘fake’ grass fed beef.

Why Should You Choose “Grass-Fed” Beef?

There are numerous reasons why we should choose grass-fed beef.

Number one: it’s natural.

Cows really aren’t into grains.

Second, in this message, I’m not claiming you to be a liar, but was just curious how we know who’s telling us the truth or not.So, are you saying all “grass-fed” labeled beef at any super market is not only grass fed? Just curious as to how we would know which are and which aren’t.Is US Wellness Meats the only company where one can purchase purely “grass-fed” beef? Or just one of the best? Also, how do we know their cows don’t die on grain like the others.I guess none of us would really know unless we watched the cow we purchase grow, eat and harvest before our eyes.Curiously,

Thanks for the great questions!
“You are what you eat” applies to cows”… as well as humans!
The reason we use US Wellness Meats is because we are actually certain they use 100% live and die on grass cows.
(You’ll see that they don’t have high enough yield to even keep stocked with most of their basic items!)
They aren’t the highest “Yield” grass-fed farm – but they are very high quality.
All cows start out on the pasture – drinking mother’s milk and eating grass.
But even ‘grass-fed’ cows are often brought indoors to fatten up on grain and receive antibiotics.
Not to mention that the grain most very likely contains GMO’s.
If you’re looking for grass-fed beef – make sure it’s *100%* Grass-Fed from cradle to grave, so to speak.
Or 100% Grass Fed “until the cow goes to pasture”… err… well you get the point.
Look for the term “grass-finished” or “100% pasture-raised” as well.
This term refers to what the animal actually EATS, as opposed to “free-range”, which means that the animal spends part of it’s days outdoors.
