1.  Jumping Rope…

I got my jumprope for less than $20.  It’s light, portable, and can be used virtually anywhere you have a flat surface and a sky above your head.  (Or high ceilings)

Try to jump rope for 7 minutes in sets of 30-second intervals.  Trust me – it’s a lot harder than you think if it’s been a few years since you jumped rope!

Repeat 7 Times!

Jumping rope torches calories.  In fact, you’d have to run an 8-minute mile to work off more calories than you burn jumping rope!

Peter Schulman, MD, associate professor of Cardiology at the University of CT Health Center, says of jumping rope, “It strengthens the upper and lower body and burns a lot of calories in a short time…”  But he warms that it’s important to ask your doctor to make sure your heart is up to the challenge!

To lighten stress on joints, jump rope on an exercise mat.  

2.  Push Ups…

I have always been a HUGE fan of cut, shapely arms.   For men and women alike – this can be a HUGE problem area!

So to cut out YOUR shapely arms, try to do 3 sets of 20 pushups.

2.  Look Like You Love To Be There…

How often do people walk around the gym with no makeup, shying away from people’s eye contact?

4.  Play The Training Guessing Game…

Shay Mitchell uses what she terms the “Got To Look Hot In A Week” plan.

Taking your weight loss plan week-by-week is way easier than the thought of giving up ice cream and pizza for life.

She says that in 7 days, she varies her workouts between bicycling, treadmill intervals, and other exercises that keep her body guessing all week.

5.  Act Like A Kid…

The first time I took a martial arts class, it felt like I was a kid.

Jumping, kicking, wearing pajamas… loved.it!

Try to imagine some workouts that make you feel like a kid.

Maybe it’s getting on a bike.  Perhaps it’s box-jumping or Zumba dance class.

When you are having fun while training… you guessed it.  You forget it’s ‘training’ at all!

Plus, as Emmy Rossum puts it, if you take a new class that’s fun, you get to soak up the positive energy around you.

There’s invariably going to be somebody putting in 110%, which causes you to want to give your all, too.

Not in the mood to cross-country run? Try planking for one minute intervals instead!

6.  Shorter IS Smarter!

There is mounting evidence that your body actually gains MORE muscle when you do short, intense workouts as opposed to long, exhausting ones.

Supermodel Miranda Kerr uses a workout that only requires *twelve* minutes a day.

Four times a week, she does intervals with simple exercises, such as lunges, squats, and star jumps.

Because it’s only TWELVE measly minutes, she can fit it into her busy schedule.

And in case you didn’t know this, she’s basically one of the world’s most famous supermodels… so something is clearly working well about this workout!

Try 12 minutes of burpees, lunges, or sets of box jumps.

This high intensity training is great for short, powerful training!

Don’t deprive yourself: cheat at the “right” times!

7.  Pick The Right Times To Cheat…

 

 

Oh, yeah.  You know you’ve done it.

You’ve been eating really good all day so you allow yourself to have a few chips at night.

Maybe you order the creamed corn instead of spinach as a side.

You may even have a drink or two… or three or four…

STOP!  This is probably the worst habit you can make in your diet because you sit on those calories all night long without having burned them off… and worse yet – it interrupts your sleep!

And if your sleep is shoddy – your whole body suffers.

Moreover, if you haven’t had a lot to eat in the earlier part of the day, your metabolism isn’t cranked up to handle a binge-fest at night!

Starlet Hayden Panettiere indulges, but makes sure to do it in the morning so that she can burn if off all day.

What’s your ‘real’ goal? To look good in a swimsuit? To live longer for your kids?

8.  Ask Yourself “The Question”…

What’s the point?

You may be asking yourself this very question as you run in place on the treadmill or kill your quads doing some squats.

But keeping the bigger question in mind is can help you make it through your weight loss slumps.

Celebrity weight loss trainer Jillian Michaels started with the question ‘why do I want to be in shape?” and wrote it down.

She sees her list constantly everywhere to remind herself why she trains and how it will improve her life.

Why do you want to be in shape?

Is it to live longer?  To feel better?  To prove to somebody that you ‘still got it’?

It’s nobody’s place to judge why you train but your own.

So grab yourself a pen and a pad of sticky-notes and write it down.  Now put it in drawers, on your fridge, in your closet, and on your mirror.

You’ll be so motivated all day that you won’t be able to ditch your workout!

9.  Develop A Self-Love Spidey-Sense…

Going to the gym is NOT always the best thing for you.

Sometimes it’s sleeping in.

And sometimes the best thing for your weight loss goal is to have a cheat day!

You know what is going to motivate you and what will, by contrast, wipe you out!

So listen to your body.

If you aren’t in the mood for weight training, take a walk with the dogs.

Or if you don’t feel like a long workout – just try to do 10 minutes of something fun, like dancing or jumping rope.

Maybe what your body NEEDS to repair and recover is a nice, long bath!

Cameron Diaz says that taking care of herself is more important than having a ripped stomach.  “…Some days I go to the gym for literally 10 minutes.  But the fact that I got up and got there matters to me.”

If you’re like most people I know – you actually really love to get in some exercise.

… But it’s hard to find the time!

You wake up, take out dogs or dress children, make juice or breakfast, clean, get ready, go to work, run errands, and by the time you get home it’s dark… and people need to get fed, still!

Does this feel like your life?

Well, you’re not alone.

That’s why I’ve come up with these Fail-Proof ways to lose weight and stay fit – no matter what your schedule!

1.  DO Find Low-Maintenance Workouts…

One of the hardest things for people is that they’re dependent on a gym, exercise class, or atmosphere to workout in.

In order to be able to fit in fitness no matter you are, learn how to do exercises that have a massive impact, with minimal exercise equipment.

I’ve recently written about my 6-10 favorite “independent” exercises – one here and the other here.

The best low-maintenance exercises are HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and bodyweight exercises – like the ones I linked to above.

These are easy to do when traveling, at home in your living room, and even when you find a spare 10 minutes on your hand in between walking the dogs, making dinner, or phone calls for work!

2. DO Get Into Flow…

In work and in exercise, there is something referred to as ‘flow’.

It’s when you get so into something that time falls away without you noticing.

I get in flow when I run.  Others when they dance, do yoga, lift weights, or bicycle.

According to Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow is:

…being completely involved in an activity for its own sake.  The ego falls away.  Time flies.  Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz.  Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.

Do you know what puts you in flow?  

3. DO Make It Important…

Some people treat working out like going to the dentist.  They dread it.

But it isn’t the workout they hate… it’s the fact that they haven’t prioritized it in their schedules.

Would you leave your child waiting at the curb all night?  Would you go without eating for days?  No.

But workouts don’t often take such precedence in our lives.

However, think about how much MORE work you’ll accomplish when your body and mind are in tip-top shape.

Then think of all the health bills you will avoid because of your working out.

Imagine the working out will improve your professional life, your family, even your sex life.

Now tell me: how important is that workout to you?  Very.

4.  DO Let yourself Get Away With “Less”…

If I’m driving you crazy with this lately, that’s because it’s such a strong belief I have.

Something IS better than nothing.

Shorter workouts are VERY good for fast fat loss.

If I told you that there’s a workout I have started doing in place of a whole hour of cardio, would you believe me?

When I first heard about this workout, I heard tales of crazy cross-fit extremists doing these until they threw up…

But these exercises are so appealing because they give you a full-body workout and are believed to burn 50% MORE calories than a regular strength-training workout!

So what did I do?  Naturally – I tried it for myself!

Oh, boy – has it changed my life!

The Best Full-Body Workout I’ve Ever Done…

This workout is called none other than the ‘Burpee’.

Burpees are:

  • Equipment-free
  • Full-Body workout
  • Cardiovascular
  • Strengthening

They  target the muscles in your upper arms, chest, hamstrings, abs, and thighs.  WHOA!

Burpees are also known as ‘squat thrusts’.

And let me tell you – they’re incredibly difficult…. and REALLY fun!

Regularly people ask me how I get my strong arms and toned legs.

And because approximately 25% of my workouts are sets of this tough little oddly-named exercise, I thought I’d share it with you today!

When I first started doing burpees, I’d do one minute of burpees at a comfortable pace and then rest for one minute.

Perhaps I’d do 3 sets.

Now I’ve worked up to a full 100 burpees in about 12 minutes.  Generally I do them in sets of 15 or 20.

And then I’m done.

Just 12 minutes of burpees has replaced an entire hour of running in my workout routine!

How To Do A Burpee…

I hate reading descriptions of workouts, so here’s a cool little sketch tutorial I created for you:

Burpees

1.  First, start in a standing position with your feet shoulder-width apart.

2.  Next, drop to a squatting position with each of your hands on the ground.

3.  Now kick your feet backwards and lower yourself to the ground to a pushup position, but don’t push back up.

4.  Now kick your feet back into the squatting position while your arms are straightened out.

5.  Jump as high as you can.  Then return to standing position for step 1 again.

** WARNING: Burpees are a really intense workout that you should work up to slowly and carefully!

Three Best Burpee Alternatives…

You may not be ready in either muscle strength or cardio strength for a burpee.

But that’s okay!

Here are three things you can do to work up to them…

1.  Squats

Squats

Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and bend your knees until your seat is nearly at the height of your heels.

This is a great exercise to tone your thighs and butt.

Start by trying to do 10 squats per day and work yourself up to as many as 100 or more!

I try to do squats twice per week on days I don’t jog or run.

2.  Pushups

I truly have some of the strongest arms of any gal I know.

My secret?

Almost every day I do 40 pushups before I leave the house for a social event or for work.

Originally this started as a way to pump me up because of my social anxiety.

Now it has become a healthy practice I use to stay in tip-top shape!

Start with 10 per day and work up to a number that feels good for you.

I do pushups at least 3 days per week and am complimented almost daily on my incredibly fit arms.  People are shocked when they find out that I haven’t used an exercise machine since high school!

3.  Box Jumps

Box Jumps

Box jumps burn tons of calories and make your legs super strong.

If you don’t have gym access, you can use steps, playgrounds, park benches, or other stable objects you find around the garage or house.

Plus, box jumps help you strengthen your hips, which will help you avoid hip problems when you get older.

What’s more, they make you feel like a little kid again – they’re really fun!
