>According to The Washington Post, both men and women spend a combined amount of more than 3.5 billion dollars a year on hair loss treatments. In addition to the over-the-counter topical treatments and medications prescribed by doctors, clinical researchers are looking at tea as a potential hair loss treatment.
The American Hair Loss Association, dedicated to hair loss education and research admits, “Most of today’s medicines for treating hair loss have limited effectiveness. Currently, we don’t have a complete understanding of exactly why certain diseases cause hair loss.”
Plus, these treatments are not cheap. Rogaine requires a daily regimen and a monthly expense of around $30, and a hair loss prescription used by women for hormone regulation can cost as much as $200 a month, which is typically not covered by health insurance.
Questionably effective and expensive traditional hair loss treatments have doctors and clinical researchers expanding their reach into herbal remedies that have existed for hundreds, if not thousands of years to see if diet and hair loss have some kind of connection. The studies involvingpolyphenols in tea continue to appear, with results showing health benefits including healthier gums and skin, increased metabolism and weight loss, and the possible prevention of cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.
Although the study, performed by doctors at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angeles, used mice, the results were quite exciting.
The diet and hair loss study included mice that had already been used in drug experiments. Some had experienced hair loss while others had a healthy body of hair. One group was given a natural polyphenol extract, while the other group just received water.
The experiment lasted six months, and in the group that received water there was no change. On the other hand, the mice receiving polyphenols in their diet showed that their hair loss stopped completely. But the really exciting result, which the study stated as being “spontaneous remission,” was that 33% of the mice actually experienced significant hair re-growth.
