Can Tea Enhance Your Sex Drive?

Can Tea Increase Your Sex Drive?

I can be a bit shy when discussing love and sexuality with my newletter readers….

But I just ran across some research that really fascinates me.
If you’re like me, it seems like everywhere you turn people are making excuses for why they don’t have the romantic relationships or intimacy they want, or once had.

A day turns into a week, which turns in to a month… and couples grow further apart.

Reasons For Romance Lulls…

There a lot of reasons why people lose the romance in their relationships.

One major reason can be depression.

Another may be a lack of confidence.

Exhaustion is another huge reason people site for low sex drive and romantic lulls.

And children and work seem to always provide an excuse for people.

But there is an unbelievable way to promote a healthy romantic life, with none other than Slimming Tea!

An Unlikely Romance Savior…

It isn’t as sexy as chocolate covered strawberries or a glass of champagne, but Slimming Tea is actually really good for your love life!

Catechins, the same antioxidants that help you fight cancer, are in enormous proportion in Slimming Tea.

And catechins actually promote blood flow all over your body, which enhances your sex drive!

They also boost brain power, enhance memory, improve your mood, help you focus…

All of these things can help lift your depression or blues, which helps you acheive greater intimacy with your partner.

In addition, Slimming Tea has no sugar, chemicals, or high fructose corn syrup.

How To Sleep Better…

How To Sleep Like A Baby… You’ll Be Shocked To Find Out How…

Losing sleep is painful.

It can cause you to become cranky, miss hours at work, and it kills your drive for healthy living, working out, and even intimacy.

Alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and other factors may play a part in your sleep habits.

And if you aren’t sleeping well… you probably aren’t seeing the weight loss, immunity, or vitality you hope to acheive, either!

Slimming Tea Drinkers often state that one of the first things they notice when the replace coffee, energy drinks, sodas, and other bottled beverages with Slimming Tea is improved sleep quality.

They get more of it and they feel more refreshed with less sleep.

Along with Slimming Tea to help you sleep, here are 5 ways to transform your sleeping habits…

1.  Get MORE Sunlight…

When your eyes are exposed to the sun, your brain produces melatonin.

Melatonin is a hormone that helps you sleep.

When you’re exposed to the sun in the daytime, your brain produces natural melatonin at night.  This helps you get a good nights sleep.

Also, sunlight helps keep your circadian rhythms in sync.

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder found that campers who spent the whole day outdoors woke up and fell asleep at the same time every day.

2.  Get LESS Screen Light…

One reason you may have trouble sleeping is because you have a phone on one side of you, a laptop on another, and a television blaring in front of you.

These are known to give you a lower quality of sleep, and they make it harder for you to go to sleep

Scientists at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute discovered that it only takes two measly hours of exposure to a device with a backlit display for melatonin supression to occur.

Professor Mariana Figueiro states, “Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22 percent.”

3.  Let NO Light In The Bedroom…

If you have a bright lampost on your street, a lit building outside your window, or live in an urban environment; it’s pretty hard to get pitch blackness.

Artificial light is linked to a decrease quality of sleep because it lowers your production of melatonin.

Without melatonin production, you don’t get as drowsy, and have a hard time falling asleep.

If you live in an urban environment, try to get some blackout shades so that you can get pitch blackness.

4.  Sleep in A Colder Environment…

When our body temperature is declining, we sleep best, according to the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews.

This is particularly true for insomniacs, who generally have a higher core body temperature at night.

Try setting your thermostat as low as 60 degrees at night to help your sleep.

Or do what I tend to do: take a shower just before bed.

This will drop your core body temperature and help you get to sleep fast.

5.  Get More Exercise…

Exercising 20 to 30 minutes may help reduce the amount of time needed to fall asleep by half.

It’s better to do this early in the morning, when you’re more alert.

Plus, working out before bed will only leave you feeling pumped and make it hard to fall asleep!

Did you know that Slimming Tea also effects your brain’s production of dopamine and seratonin?

Plus it’s low in caffeine, so you can have a roaring metabolism all day, and then sleep more soundly at night.

Read more about how Slimming Tea may help you balance your life, and your weight right HERE.

If you’re having trouble sleeping, one of the best things you can do is to replace bottled beverages, sodas, and energy drinks with Slimming Tea.

It only has about a third the caffeine as a cup of coffee – but it gives you a gentle boost of natural energy all day!

Do You Have The "Fat Gene?"

Patient Undergoing Ultrasound Of Thyroid Gland

Is There Really Such A Thing As a “Fat Gene”?

I grew up thinking there was a nasty, evil bug implanted in certain ‘unlucky’ women that made them fat.

Women in my family told me that we had the ‘fat gene’.

As you can imagine, I felt doomed and it marred my childhood… and many of my early adult years.

I was filled with fear and hopelessness; and as a little girl I assumed that I, too, had the “fat gene”.

No matter how many sports I did or how healthily I ate; I would get fat and feel miserable, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I was dead wrong.

What was this ‘fat gene, and why did I fear it for so long?

There’s No Such Thing As A “Fat Gene”…

When my family told me that we had the fat gene, what they were referring to was the simple fact that they weren’t built like 6 foot tall members of the Swedish Bikini Team.

We’re all generally short, curvy, and we most certainly don’t have the luxury of eating whatever we want without gaining weight.

But in some cases, women in my family did discover that they did, in fact, have one specific disorder: hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

The thyroid is a real gland that has real effects on women, and occasionally on men, too.

Hypothyroidism does NOT mean you’re doomed to be fat.

…But it does mean that there are specific things you can do to keep your body in it’s best possible shape.

First, it’s education.

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that produces a hormone which regulates body temperature, metabolism and heartbeat.

In the absence of sound knowledge, my family called it our ‘fat gene’ and used it as an excuse for why everybody seemed to be overweight.

What I found, however, was that scientists believe that in women over 35, chances of thyroid disorder are extremely high – even up to 30% or more!

And sadly, women suffer thyroid problems about 10 times as much as men.

Perhaps this is why people lied to me as a little girl and said that the women in my family had a ‘fat gene’.

What Happens When You Have A Thyroid Disorder…

If you have a sluggish thyroid, the little butterfly-shaped gene in the back of your neck doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.

If you have hyperthyroidism (vs. hypo), well as you can imagine, this means you produce too much thyroid hormone.

While thyroid imbalance is linked to genetics, it can also go haywire due to an autoimmune attack, pregnancy, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or even toxins in your environment.

A few things that happen to your body as a result of imbalanced thyroid are:

  • Fatigue…

Fatigue is most commonly found in hypothyroidism.

I used to wake up tired after 9 hours of sleep.  That’s when I knew I might have a thyroid problem…

  • Depression…

If you’re feeling particularly blue, you may have hypothyroidism.

That’s because hypothyroidism actually impacts your brain’s ‘happy’ chemical, Serotonin.

  • Anxiety…

Hyperthyroidism is likely to make you feel anxious.

Your whole body is flooded with too much thyroid hormone, which makes you feel ‘hyper’.  It also causes your metabolism to work out of control.

  • Increase or Decrease of Appetite…

Hyperthyroidism can cause you to feel hungry all the time, probably because your metabolism is revving as fast as a racecar.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, may alter with your sense of taste and smell.

  • Mental Fog…

When you’re suffering from a thyroid imbalance, you may feel a bit fuzzy in the brain.

That’s because too much thyroid hormone and make it hard to concentrate; you’re feeling hyper.

Hypothyroidism causes the opposite; lethargy, fatigue, forgetfulness, and fogginess.

  • Constipation

You’ve tried laxatives, herbs, hot water, prunes… but you’re bloated and constipated all the time.

This may be a symptom of hypothyroidism because your slow thyroid also slows down digestion.

  • High Blood Pressure…

My mother found out about her hypothyroidism when she learned her blood pressure was through the roof.

Hypo and hyperthyroidism can manifest high blood pressure.

In fact, those with hypothyroidism are three times more likely to develop hypertension!

  • Neck Pain…

Sore neck?  It may not be due to all that time you’re playing Angry Birds on your phone.

Rather, it may be thyroid swelling.

Look in a hand-mirror and drink a gulp of water.

If you see bulges or protrusions in the thyroid area, just below your Adam’s apple, it may be best to go see a doctor.

  • Weight Gain…

Weight gain can be caused from a plethora of things – some good, like putting on muscle, and some bad – like carrying excess water weight.

Weight gain, however, is one of the primary reasons people have their thyroids checked with a doctor.

If you notice that you’re gaining weight without any measurable change to your diet, you may have an underactive thyroid.

If you notice that you’re losing weight without big dietary changes, this may be an overactive thyroid.

  • Hair Loss…

One majorly scary symptom of hypothyroidism is a loss of hair.

Your slow system from an under-active thyroid actually puts your hair follicles in ‘resting’ mode, not growing new hair!

  • High Cholesterol…

Hypothyroidism can be linked to elevated levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

High levels of LDL cholesterol can beget heart problems, and even heart failure.

*Hypothyroid and hyperthyroidism are serious afflictions that you want to be sure to diagnose with your doctor and treat immediately.

What Can You Do If You Think You Have Hypo or Hyperthyroidism?

1.  Get Tested

If you believe that you are suffering from an underactive or overactive thyroid, please get tested with your doctor.

You may choose a holistic doctor or a traditional doctor to have your hormone levels tested.

2.  Respect Your Natural Energy Levels

In order to really pick up on what your body is throwing down, try to cut caffeine and sugar from your diet.

Instead of a caffeinated beverage, drink Slimming Tea.

Slimming Tea only has about 1/3rd the caffeine as a cup of coffee – which means you can drink Slimming Tea all day long without the jittery, anxiety-producing effect of coffee.

Plus, Slimming Tea gives you a natural energy and productivity boost because of the combination of L-Theanine and caffeine present in just the right amount to keep you alert and productive without the energy crashes!

3.  Eat Smarter…

Your body treats carbohydrates like sugar, which can cause you to gain weight, especially if you have an underactive thyroid.

You may try eating more protein because protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues.

You can restore normal thyroid function in many cases by upping your intake of nuts, quinoa, organic meats, and nut butters.

Also try to cut carbs as well as starchy vegetables.

One of the best ways to cut carbs is to drink Slimming Tea 15 minutes before every meal.

It helps boost your metabolism as well as eliminate carb cravings.

4.  Drink For Your Blood Pressure…

If you have an overactive thyroid, drinking Slimming Tea after a meal may reduce risk of heart attack because it keeps your blood flowing as well as helps calm you down.

Plus, it improves digestion and helps your body work in synchronicity to stay healthy and properly functioning.

5.  Up Your Fat Intake…

Fat is incredibly important to your healthy functioning, as well as weight loss!

For one, fat and cholesterol help your body have normal hormonal functioning.

Eat more olive oil, avocado, flax seeds, chia, fish, nuts, and full-fat dairy.

6.  Go Gluten-Free…

Gluten can riase likelihood of an autoimmune attack on your thyroid.

That’s because the molecular makeup of thyroid tissue is very similar to gluten, which confuses your body.

While you may not be gluten-intolerant, you may have other food sensistivities.

If you have a dairy, soy, gluten, or other allergies, these foods cause an inflammatory response in your body.

7.  Practice Relaxation…

One of the best ways to fight hormonal imbalance is to find something that calms you, or energizes you when you feel foggy.

Try taking a walk outside, or if you live in an area with trails you can go for a hike.

Get a dog – or a cat.  Ride your bike to work.  Get a maid for chores that make you angry.  Get a different perspective on chores that would normally infuriate you.  I’ve begun listening to audio books when I do the dishes, which makes the chore turn into a relaxing, positive experience.

 8.  Drink Slimming Tea…

Slimming Tea is full of flavonoids; powerful antioxidants that are beneficial to your central nervous system.

One Cambridge study even shows that they may benefit your central nervous system by protecting neurons against stress-induced injury, promoting synaptic plasticity, memory, and cognitive function.

Plus, Slimming Tea has L-Theanine… and amino acid that is able to help you relax, reduce stress, improve cognition, and even enhance your mood.

11 Amazing Benefits of Sun Exposure…

Happy in the grass

Find out why the sun and Slimming Tea create a perfect “Happiness Cocktail!”

Today I feel like celebrating!

After what seems like interminably cloudy, windy days; we’re finally having a good dose of sun!

One of my employees spent the afternoon in the park yesterday in Denver – another went to a street fair in Chicago – and I ran outside with my puppies in Texas.  We were all in such great moods!

Did you know that Western culture even has traditions of sunlight therapy that date back to the ancient Greeks?  They called it Heliosis.

So if you’re going to brave going outside without sunscreen this year (which blocks the Vitamin D absorption in your body), here are 10 reasons you’re going to feel better for it!

Oh yeah… and if you’re just reading for the FLASH SALE – go HERE now.

10 Amazing Benefits of Sun Exposure

1. Sun May Reverse Certain Cancers…

Some medical experts have used a whole-foods based diet with sunlight to reverse metabolized breast cancer.  Dr. Zane Kime popularized the theory with the book “Sunlight”, in which he proposes that sunlight lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, and pressure on blood sugar.  He also discusses how sun combined with a whole foods diet can help you resist infection.

2.  Sun Makes You Sexy…

Dr. Kime also proposes that Sunlight increases endurance, and even sex hormones.  Maybe sun, and not ‘bathing suits’, is the reason so many teenagers flock to the beach for days on end?

3. Sun Fights Bacteria…

14 million people visit the hospital every year from skin and soft tissue infections.  However, the antibiotics normally used to treat bacteria are becoming less effective in a society that has become increasingly resistant to antiobiotics.  According to the AAC (Antimicrobial Agents & Chemotherapy) Report from December 20121, sunlight may reverse skin infections or bacteria contracted through surgeries, under-chlorinated pools, even dirty contact lenses2.

4. Sun Fights Acne…

I’ll never forget watching my father sunbathe for hours when I was a kid.  A lifetime acne sufferer – he claimed that the sun helped ‘dry up’ acne.  Hmm… was he crazy?  Not necessarily!  Well think about it; sun is known to fight bacteria.  And not to mention Vitamin D is the best way for our bodies to fight acne!  Now imagine what moderate sun exposure and acne-fighting Slimming Tea can do for your skin!

 5. Sunlight Lowers Cholesterol…

The sun may convert high cholesterol in the body into steroid and sex hormones4.  However in a lack of sunlight, your cholesterol levels may become to high!  It’s important to talk to your doctor about how much cholesterol is too high or too low.  Yes – cholesterol CAN be too low.  Did you know that if your cholesterol levels are too low… you won’t be able to absorb the sun’s amazing benefits?  Healthy exposure to sun promotes sufficient levels of Vitamin D, but in order to for your body to synthesize Vitamin D, you also need healthy levels of cholesterol.5

 6.  Sunlight Increases Testosterone

Vitamin D is a “steroid” hormone that is critical in developing healthy sperm cells.  Moreover, Vitamin D. actually helps boost libido by increasing testosterone.  Austrian researchers found that overweight men who were given Vitamin D. supplements over one year had a significant increase in testosterone6.

7. Sunlight Lowers Blood Pressure…

The Journal of Investigative Dermatology proposes that just 30 minutes of sun per day is linked to lowering cholesterol, reducing blood pressure and therefore reducing your risk of a heart attack.7

8. Sun Boosts Metabolism…

Sunlight delivers oxygen to the blood – kind of like a workout!  In fact, moderate sunlight also stresses the body similar to they way resistance training would; thereby increasing metabolism8.

9.  Sunlight Is Good For Kids…

It isn’t all about getting away from the glowing box in the living room.  (Which is increasingly becoming more of a glowing ‘tablet’.)  Sunlight in small children may actually effect how tall the child becomes!  Studies promote pregnant women provide moderate sun exposure to promote strong bones in their babies9.  Another concern for women who’ve had ceasarians is that these babies are often found to be Vitamin D deficient10!  All the more reason to go play outside, little ones!

 10.  Sunlight Makes You Happy…

A lot of people complain about being sad during the winter – which is referred to as “Seasonal Affective Disorder” – or SAD.  There’s some truth to this!  In fact, one study found that sunlight increases serotonin, one of our brain’s ‘happiness chemicals’11.  Did you know that Slimming Tea also increases serotonin and dopamine production in our brains, making us feel happier when we drink it?  Read more about Slimming Tea here.

 11.  Sunlight Helps You Sleep Better…

When your eyes are exposed to the sun, your brain produces melatonin; a hormone that helps you sleep. When you’re exposed to the sun in the daytime, your brain produces natural melatonin at night – which helps you get a good night’s sleep12.

Now go enjoy a cup of Slimming Tea and some of those beautiful sunny rays!

Both the sun AND Slimming Tea have effects on your brain that increase ‘happiness chemicals’, dopamine and seratonin.

Do This Every Day To Fight Disease and Stay Slim!

Do This Every Day

This may be the world’s easiest way to fight off disease and stay slim!

How do you start your day?

Do you wake up and jump out of bed, ready to pour that first magical cup of tea into you favorite mug?

Maybe you look forward to walking the dog or taking the kids to the bus stop while clasping a hot tea or a refreshing iced Wu-Long.

Well, there’s a simple trick that I’ve been using for years that is one of the best, most healthy ways you can start your day.

Many say that the rituals you have in the morning set the tone for you day…

…As well as makeup the overall health of your body, and length of your life.

Here is the #1 ritual that I would start every single morning with: Wu-Long Tea with Lemon Zest.

I know – sounds really simple, right?

But it’s actually kinda complex… insomuch as it’s one of the most multi-faceted, powerful, positive and incredibly healthy ways you can kick off your day – every day.

Here are 7 reasons Wu-Long with Lemon is good for you:

1.  It Hydrates You

Hydration is a powerful way to keep your body functioning properly.

When you’re dehydrated you feel tired.

Plus, it leads to toxicity in the body.

Water flushes toxins from your body, making you feel much more energetic.

2.  It Keeps You “Regular”

Wu-Long hydrates you, which actually staves off constipation.

Wu-Long is a great way to stimulate your digestive system.

Lemons are also important for loosening up toxins in your digestive tract.

Lemons are also powerful for cleansing the liver.

3.  Wu-Long with Lemon Boosts Your Immune System

Lemons are known to be powerful anti-viral, immune-boosting, and anti-bacterial fruits.

In fact, the Ancient Egyptians used lemons to protect against poison.

(And some say pirates used them to guard against scurvy.  Arrr!)

Lemons are high in Vitamin C, especially in the ZEST.  That’s the delicious yellow outside of the lemon.

Some say the zest of a lemon has 100 TIMES the concentrated nutrients of the juice.

That’s right – don’t throw away your zest!

One really neat trick I use is to microplane lemon zest into ice cube trays to make zesty lemon-flavored ice cubes.  Mmmm!

Use a microplane to dash that zest in your Wu-Long tea.

The potassium is an added bonus because it gives your brain a boost and helps control blood pressure, too!

Lemons also have Vitamins B6 and B12.

4.  It’s Alkalyzing

Lemons are very alkalizing, which helps you fight disease.

They take on the opposite effect of their acidic nature when WITHIN our bodies.

Yeah, it’s kinda counter-intuitive!

An alkaline body is critical to fight diseases, like cancer.

Plus, Wu-Long is high in anti-oxidants that further work to detox, alkalize, and rid your body of diseases present or oncoming.

5.  It’s Good For Your Skin

You probably already know that Wu-Long fights acne and gives you healthy, glowing skin.

But did you know that Vitamin C is critical for getting rid of wrinkles?

Plus Vitamin C fights skin blemishes.

This is due to citric acid in lemons.

Plus, both Wu-Long and lemons help your body alkalize, which fights the bacteria that causes skin blemishes!

6.  Wu-Long with Lemon Zest Helps You Lose Weight

Wu-Long tea raises your energy expenditure throughout the entire day.

It also boosts your metabolism for 24 hours after you drink it, while oxidizing fat in the body.

Did you know that Lemons are also helpful for weight loss?

That’s because they’re rich in pectin fiber, which crushes cravings.

Moreover, the alkalizing effect of Wu-Long with lemon pushes your body to shed fat faster.

7.  It Makes You Smarter

You’re smart to consume Wu-Long with Lemons because of all these benefits.

But did you know that Wu-Long with Lemons also makes you smarter?

That’s right: L-Theanine found in Wu-Long helps generate dopamine and serotonin – neurotransmitters in the brain that make you feel good.

They ALSO make you more productive and boost your brain power.

Lemons have a calming effect that relieve fatigue, exhaustion, dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, and tension.

Moreover, lemon increases concentration and alertness.

Whew!  Those are a LOT of benefits!

Here’s a quick recap of why you should start EVERY day with Wu-Long and Lemon Zest!

  1. Hydration
  2. Keeps you “regular”
  3. Boosts Immunity
  4. Alkalyzing
  5. Good for your skin
  6. Helps you lose weight
  7. Makes you smarter

Doctor Incorporate THIS To Fight Prostate Cancer…

Prostate cancer is a disease that men can’t afford to ignore any longer.

While some would like to remain oblivious to the disease; many are devoted to finding ways to prevent, or at least delay, the disease.

As men age, their risk of prostate cancer increases.

Plus… there is also evidence to suggest that if your father or grandfather had prostate cancer, you may be at a higher risk.

Doctors have recommended that many men trying to prevent prostate cancer first cut refined sugar from their diets and fill their plates with fruits and vegetables.

But one doctor has incorporated another interesting addition to patients’ anti-prostate cancer diets: Oolong Tea.

Many people looking to prevent cancer incorporate tea… they ditch the coffee and soda and replace it with Oolong.

If you’re lucky…

You don’t just use any old grocery store Oolong.

Rather, you choose Wu-Long.

Wu-Long is several times MORE powerful than grocery store tea…

Plus it doesn’t have all the nasty chemicals and added flavors or coloring that grocery store blends have.

That’s right: 100% Natural Wu-Long has long been used in disease and cancer prevention by the Chinese.

Wu-Long has some of the highest polyphenol compounds in any tea on the planet.

Here are just a few ways it fights cancer:

  • · High Antioxidants
  • · Pesticide-free
  • · Chemical-free
  • · No environmental toxins
  • · Obesity-fighting
  • · Detoxifying

Hippocrates said, “Let food by thy medicine”.

That’s why we at Okuma take pride in purveying the world’s healthiest, cleanest, and one of the most antioxidant-rich teas on the planet.

Use it for weight loss, weight maintenance, or in your daily preventative practices.

There isn’t a cure for cancer… but there are a lot of things we can do to keep our bodies trim and detoxed.

You Won't Believe What People Are Using To Quit Smoking…

Are Pharmacies Snuffing Cigarette Sales in 2014?

I just received an awesome comment from one of our Okuma Nutritionals Wu-Long Tea drinkers.

Cherl says:

Wu-long has helped me quit smoking.

After reading the book “POWER Of HABIT”, by Charles Duhigg,

when I crave a cigarette, I have a cup of Wu-long instead.

It works!  ~ Cheryl

Congratulations, Cheryl!

(And with FREE SHIPPING for our Email Newsletter subscribers – you’ll never run out!)

I knew that Wu-Long is known to curb carb cravings… but curbing cigarette cravings, as well?

I’m so happy to hear that people are using Wu-Long to strengthen their bodies… and their wills!

You made me think about an incredible piece of news I read this week…

CVS Jumping “Off The Bandwagon”?

Did you know that nationwide pharmacy CVS is jumping “off” the tobacco bandwagon?

That’s right: in October of 2014, CVS Pharmacy will STOP selling smokes.

You heard me correctly: ALL tobacco sales – CVS is snuffing them out.

Thomas Frieden, director at the CDC, told Reuters:

“I think CVS recognized that it was just paradoxical to be both a seller of deadly products and a healthcare provider.”

While CVS isn’t quite eliminating everything ‘toxic’ from it’s stores, such as candy, OTC drugs, or processed foods…

This is a big step in motivating other pharmacies or grocery store chains to eliminate tobacco sales.

But if you think about it… why does a pharmacy –the very place where people go to find medicine toheal from their sicknesses- sell the very thing that makes people sick?!

Kudos to CVS for staying the course – as their stock value dropped a bit last week in an apparent reaction to this news.

But don’t get too choked up about the news…CVS isn’t quite totally in the health business.

While they’re going to lose some money from lost tobacco sales eventually… they’re offering smoking cessation programs in tobacco’s stead.

How do I have the funny feeling that expensive anti-smoking drugs may just become much more popular in coming months?

What YOU Can Do To Snuff Out YOUR Bad Habits…

Are You Eating Yoga Mats and Shoe Rubber?

Grassroots movement tries to ban yoga mats and shoe leather from Subway sandwiches…

I couldn’t be more supportive of small, grassroots efforts by writers, researchers, and bloggers to abolish toxic food additives and ingredients regularly consumed by the public.

And every once in a while, I have to share something with you that you may not otherwise see or read unless you’re really tuned into the grassroots movement.

Earlier this week, witnessing the powerful effort by the informational ‘food babe’ website really put a smile on my face.

On February 4th, 2014, the website launched this petition for Subway to abolish a nasty chemical called azodicarbonamide found in Subway sandwiches.  (Let’s call it “AZO” in this article.)

AZO is a plastic chemical that was found in Subway sandwiches’ bread.

You can also find it on the bottom of your shoe… literally.

It’s used in yoga mats and synthetic materials like shoe rubber.  YUCK!

But the signatures aren’t worth a thing if Subway sandwiches doesn’t get rid of the toxic ingredients found in it’s bread.

Okuma family – please let’s get behind this petition.

How Dangerous IS Azodicarbonamide?

Millions of people all over the world – many children- are exposed to the chemicals Subway uses.

And it’s pretty well-accepted in the scientific community that these carcinogenic chemicals are linked to asthma and allergies – which are epidemic in children today.

Here’s what’s WORSE…

  • A truck carrying AZO flipped over on a Chicago highway in 2001 and people were evacuated for a half mile radius around the accident!!  Many people experienced burning eyes and skin irritation from the spilled chemical.
  • In the UK, AZO has been deemed a potential cause of asthma by the Health & Safety Executive
  • When AZO is heated, studies link it to tumors and cancer
  • AZO is banned in Europe and Australia.
  • You will get fined $450,000 for using AZO in Singapore
  • You may serve up to 15 years in prison in Singapore for using AZO

If you’re more of a social media person, you can also find a lot of social traffic around this topic with the hashtag #nowaysubway.

Are Bananas MORE Toxic Than Fukushima Fallout?

Are You Eating "Health Foods" That Are More Toxic Than Radioactive Fukushima Fallout?!

Are You Eating “Health Foods” That Are More Toxic Than Radioactive Fukushima Fallout?!

Have you read the headlines?

“28 Signs That The West Coast Is Being Absolutely fried”

“Holy Fukushima — Radiation From Japan Is Already Killing N. Americans”

“West Coast Radiation 500% Normal”

There have been several times my husband and I have even avoided our favorite restaurants for fear of radioactive roe or toxic tunafish.

I’ve been a talk radio fiend and health writer for years now – and the potential danger of chemicals and radiation in sushi is NO news.

Frankly, the filthiness of our oceans worldwide is a topic worth researching.  So I have.

And here’s the short list of some of the fascinating research I’ve found.

Why We’re Scared of Toxic Pacific Fish…

While there’s always been concerns over consuming fish from our polluted oceans, the problem has been magnified following the category 9 tsunami that hit Japan’s coast a few years ago.

In March of 2011, an earthquake in Japan caused a tsunami to hit it’s coast.

This resulted in the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant

It also amounted to the worst nuclear catastrophe since Chernobyl.

In order to cool the reactors at Fukushima off, water was poured onto them.

That water eventually seeped back into the ground nearby… and thereby into the Pacific Ocean.

Understandably, people are now feeling a little sheepish about their sashimi…

Overreactions To The Fukushima Pollution…

Radioactive isotopes found in bluefin tuna as well as several other Pacific fish are a serious deal.

In fact, a good friend of mine just literally purchased a Geiger counter to use in our favorite restaurants.

It’s been three whole years since Fukushima’s nuclear meltdown- and it’s probably about that time where we’d see three-headed halibut making it’s way into our fishing nets.

Physicians and health experts are conducting tests to see how radioactive  fish just may be.

But many of these initial tests aren’t showing anything worth the above-mentioned headlines.

Many believe that the death of sea lions that was so popular in the news was actually due to malnutrition.

And the fish with the bleeding gills that you may have read about?

This appears to be caused from a virus the causes hemorrhaging in seabirds.

The Truth About Fukushima Radiation in Pacific Fish…

While water tested at the Fukushima nuclear plant showed almost five times MORE radiation than was originally reported…

There doesn’t appear to have been an equally detrimental effect on wildlife in the area.

There are three radioactive isotopes that are most commonly found in organisms affected by Fukushima.

Strontium-90, Cesium-137 and Cesium-134.

Cesium-137 is considered the deadliest byproduct of nuclear fission from either a power plant or a bomb.

These radioactive isotopes are linked to bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and even leukemia.

Strontium-90 has been found in some tests conducted on Pacific Fish that migrate to the coast of Canada, as well as radioactive Cesium.

But while the highest level of Cesium that is approved for consumption is a level of “100”, the highest level of Cesium that has been shown is actually not in fish – but in the seaweed we use to wrap fish, melt into soups, or crunch as a salty, fishy snack.

That’s right: seaweed has been shown to have elevated Cesium-137 levels in 100% of all samples tested… but not yet enough to stop consuming.

Other fish that have been tested with exceedingly high levels of radiation include anchovies, halibut, mackerel, sardines, cod, shark and monk fish.

What Can We Do To Enjoy Sushi Without Getting Sick?

While government food agencies are supposedly monitoring fish that could be affected by Fukushima pollution and making sure that the public does NOT consume radioactive Pacific fish; many are saying that the industry is too big and the agencies too lax.

Therefore many people have sworn off sushi altogether.

That’s totally okay… my husband is a cancer survivor and I totally agree that it’s better safe than sorry.

However, here’s are a few really fascinating counter-points to consider…

Many writers and researchers who’ve shed light on the Fukushima fallout have noted that you would get 20 TIMES more radiation from eating one banana than from ‘toxic tuna’.

That’s right – bananas have a naturally occurring potassium isotope.

But you don’t hear people talking about radioactive bananas.

Other foods with radioactive elements include potatoes, kidney beans, sunflower seeds, or even Brazil nuts – which have 100 TIMES the radioactivity of “toxic” Pacific Bluefin Tuna.

You’re definitely more likely to obtain radiation from unsuspecting foods like the above, a dental x-ray, or even going through the airport scanners.

What You Really Should Be Worried About In Fish…

It’s pretty easy for journalists, talk radio hosts, new outlets, and bloggers to blow Fukushima Fallout fears… well… ‘out of the water’.

But no matter how you choose to read this article; there IS one nasty toxin we should be worried about in our fish.

It’s mercury.

You know – the red stuff in thermometers that your grandpa probably used to play with like it was silly putty?

It’s caused by power plants and other factories which pepper coastlines worldwide.

The Biodiversity Research Institude says about mercury-laden fish that, “smaller traces of the toxic metal may be enough to cause restricted brain development or other health problems for humans who eat them.”

The National Wildlife Foundation even states that mercury can “adversely alter the neurological and reproductive systems of humans and wildlife.”

About 70 percent of fish contains low levels of mercury; such as cod, salmon, herring and sardines.

At present, fish with the highest mercury content are these:

  • Bluefish
  • Grouper
  • Mackerel (Spanish, Gulf)
  • Sea Bass (Chilean)*
  • Tuna (Canned Albacore)
  • Tuna (Yellowfin)*

  • Mackerel (king)
  • Marlin
  • Orange Roughy
  • Shark
  • Swordfish
  • Tilefish
  • Tuna (Bigeye, Ahi)

I’ll keep researching and reading.

But for the time being – I’m much more worried about mercury in fish than radiation.

Which is good, because there’s nothing I love more than a seaweed-wrapped cucumber roll with Wu-Long Tea.

The Most Dangerous Food In America…

dreamstime_xs_18752284 (1)

Breaking Bread.  Making a toast.  Celebrating a birthday.

Our lives are inundated with sugar in one way or another.

With the epidemic of cancer, child obesity, and diabetes; more researchers are looking carefully at how the sugar epidemic began… and how we can put it to rest.

But did you know that 300 years ago – many people didn’t even know that sugar existed?

It only became a global commodity about 250 years ago via trade by sea.

That’s right – sugar is relatively NEW to the human diet.

However, it’s so pervasive that almost every event we mark, celebrate, mourn or commemorate has sugar or alcohol as an integral part of its ritual.

How We Got Our Global Sweet-Tooth

250 years ago trade on the seas was booming.

Sugar, alcohol, tobacco, and opium became, for the first time ever, profitable global commodities.

Our lives, and our bodies, have changed significantly in the past 300 years.

And for the latter; they haven’t improved much.

What doesn’t kill us via famine or plague now kills us more slowly via coronary heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and cancers.

Sugar Is Pervasive In Our Diets…

What was once a guilty pleasure is now a part of our morning beverage ritual, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and after-dinner night cap.

Ask yourself: have you ever gone a single day in your life without either tobacco, sugar, or alcohol?

It’s likely that you have not.

That’s because sugar takes many forms, and it isn’t just something reserved for cookies, cakes, and sweets.

In the U.S. it is the most popular addition to foods across the board.

And MOST processed foods have it.

It’s known as sugar, raw sugar, dextrose, maltose, glucose, fructose, corn sweetener, honey, corn syrup, sucrose, sorghum syrup, sorbitol, brown sugar, lactose, molasses, syrup, and fruit juice concentrate.

ALL of the above are empty calories and should be avoided!

Why Sugar Makes You Gain Weight

How bad can sugar be?

Well consider this: one measly teaspoon of white sugar has 15 calories.

A teaspoon of corn syrup has 20 calories.

And the average can of soda has 11 TEASPOONS of sugar… translating to between 165 and 220 calories just from sugar.

A couple hundred years ago when sugar started to creep into the American diet, people only ate about 2 lbs per year.

Today the average American eats over 150 pounds of sugar per year.

That’s 3 POUNDS of sugar per WEEK!

The average American even consumes more than 40 teaspoons DAILY of sugar.

Imagine setting 40 teaspoons of anything in front of you.

It’s overwhelming… and indeed it’s a scary thought!

Your Brain on Sugar…

When you consume sugar; taste receptors signal different areas of the brain, one being the cerebral cortex.

Your brain rewards you for it and tells you to have more sugar.

The same thing happens when people experience sex or take certain drugs.

That’s why people want more and more of these things and become addicted.

And yes, your brain’s reaction to sugar does lead to sugar addiction.

That’s the reason dieting can be so hard!

Either you aren’t avoiding sugars that sneak into restaurant and processed foods…

Or you’re having legitimate sugar withdrawal!

Your Gut On Sugar…

Your gut has sugar receptors, just like your brain.

When you eat sugar – your gut will actually send a warning up to your brain.

Your brain responds in one of two ways:

1)  You feel full

2)  Your insulin spikes in response to excess sugar.

The more insulin your body releases to process sugar, the more we store sugar as fat.

The insulin is meant to regulate blood sugar.

Abusing your body’s insulin response can actually cause your body to become resistant to insulin; thereby unable to regulate blood sugar.

This isn’t just a way to store excess body fat, but it’s dangerous for your overall health and wellness.

The Not-So-Sweet Side of Sugar…

Eating sugar is unique in your brain.

You see, when you eat broccoli, you don’t get the same reaction in your brain as you do when you consume sugar.

What makes sugar ‘feel’ so good?

The answer is dopamine.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good.

Dopamine is released when we consume alcohol, nicotine, heroine, and sugar.

That’s one of the reasons people become addicted to one or all of the above.

How Your Brain Regulates Nutrition…

Just because dopamine is associated with all of the above-mentioned ‘risky’ business doesn’t mean that dopamine is inherently bad.

In fact, dopamine can help you be MORE nutritious.

That’s because when you eat the same thing over and over, you don’t react with as much dopamine.

This causes our bodies to constantly seek new foods and different tastes.

Food and drink variety begets more dopamine; which causes us to try new foods and have more balanced nutrition.

How We Can Become Addicted to Sugar?

When you eat sugary foods, dopamine doesn’t level out like it does with normal foods.

When you eat sugar, the reward in your brain persists.

That’s how people get addicted to sugar – you keep eating it and it keeps feeling good!

One of the biggest offenders of sugar overload is SODA POP.

But you’ll be shocked to know how much is in tomato sauce, ketchup, even in healthy protein and cereal bars!

How To Lose Weight Naturally and Easily…
