Artificial light is linked to a decrease quality of sleep because it lowers your production of melatonin.

If you live in an urban environment, try to get some blackout shades so that you can get pitch blackness.

4.  Sleep in A Colder Environment…

When our body temperature is declining, we sleep best, according to the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews.

Try setting your thermostat as low as 60 degrees at night to help your sleep.

Or do what I tend to do: take a shower just before bed.

This will drop your core body temperature and help you get to sleep fast.

Exercising 20 to 30 minutes may help reduce the amount of time needed to fall asleep by half.

It’s better to do this early in the morning, when you’re more alert.

Is There Really Such A Thing As a “Fat Gene”?

I grew up thinking there was a nasty, evil bug implanted in certain ‘unlucky’ women that made them fat.

Women in my family told me that we had the ‘fat gene’.

As you can imagine, I felt doomed and it marred my childhood… and many of my early adult years.

I was filled with fear and hopelessness; and as a little girl I assumed that I, too, had the “fat gene”.

No matter how many sports I did or how healthily I ate; I would get fat and feel miserable, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I was dead wrong.

What was this ‘fat gene, and why did I fear it for so long?

There’s No Such Thing As A “Fat Gene”…

When my family told me that we had the fat gene, what they were referring to was the simple fact that they weren’t built like 6 foot tall members of the Swedish Bikini Team.

We’re all generally short, curvy, and we most certainly don’t have the luxury of eating whatever we want without gaining weight.

But in some cases, women in my family did discover that they did, in fact, have one specific disorder: hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

The thyroid is a real gland that has real effects on women, and occasionally on men, too.

Hypothyroidism does NOT mean you’re doomed to be fat.

…But it does mean that there are specific things you can do to keep your body in it’s best possible shape.

First, it’s education.

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland in your neck that produces a hormone which regulates body temperature, metabolism and heartbeat.

In the absence of sound knowledge, my family called it our ‘fat gene’ and used it as an excuse for why everybody seemed to be overweight.

What I found, however, was that scientists believe that in women over 35, chances of thyroid disorder are extremely high – even up to 30% or more!

And sadly, women suffer thyroid problems about 10 times as much as men.

Perhaps this is why people lied to me as a little girl and said that the women in my family had a ‘fat gene’.

What Happens When You Have A Thyroid Disorder…

If you have a sluggish thyroid, the little butterfly-shaped gene in the back of your neck doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone.

If you have hyperthyroidism (vs. hypo), well as you can imagine, this means you produce too much thyroid hormone.

While thyroid imbalance is linked to genetics, it can also go haywire due to an autoimmune attack, pregnancy, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or even toxins in your environment.

A few things that happen to your body as a result of imbalanced thyroid are:

  • Fatigue…

Fatigue is most commonly found in hypothyroidism.

I used to wake up tired after 9 hours of sleep.  That’s when I knew I might have a thyroid problem…

  • Depression…

If you’re feeling particularly blue, you may have hypothyroidism.

That’s because hypothyroidism actually impacts your brain’s ‘happy’ chemical, Serotonin.

  • Anxiety…

Hyperthyroidism is likely to make you feel anxious.

Your whole body is flooded with too much thyroid hormone, which makes you feel ‘hyper’.  It also causes your metabolism to work out of control.

  • Increase or Decrease of Appetite…

Hyperthyroidism can cause you to feel hungry all the time, probably because your metabolism is revving as fast as a racecar.

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, may alter with your sense of taste and smell.

  • Mental Fog…

When you’re suffering from a thyroid imbalance, you may feel a bit fuzzy in the brain.

That’s because too much thyroid hormone and make it hard to concentrate; you’re feeling hyper.

Hypothyroidism causes the opposite; lethargy, fatigue, forgetfulness, and fogginess.

  • Constipation

You’ve tried laxatives, herbs, hot water, prunes… but you’re bloated and constipated all the time.

This may be a symptom of hypothyroidism because your slow thyroid also slows down digestion.

  • High Blood Pressure…

My mother found out about her hypothyroidism when she learned her blood pressure was through the roof.

Hypo and hyperthyroidism can manifest high blood pressure.

In fact, those with hypothyroidism are three times more likely to develop hypertension!

  • Neck Pain…

Sore neck?  It may not be due to all that time you’re playing Angry Birds on your phone.

Rather, it may be thyroid swelling.

Look in a hand-mirror and drink a gulp of water.

If you see bulges or protrusions in the thyroid area, just below your Adam’s apple, it may be best to go see a doctor.

  • Weight Gain…

Weight gain can be caused from a plethora of things – some good, like putting on muscle, and some bad – like carrying excess water weight.

Weight gain, however, is one of the primary reasons people have their thyroids checked with a doctor.

If you notice that you’re gaining weight without any measurable change to your diet, you may have an underactive thyroid.

If you notice that you’re losing weight without big dietary changes, this may be an overactive thyroid.

  • Hair Loss…

One majorly scary symptom of hypothyroidism is a loss of hair.

Your slow system from an under-active thyroid actually puts your hair follicles in ‘resting’ mode, not growing new hair!

  • High Cholesterol…

Hypothyroidism can be linked to elevated levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol.

High levels of LDL cholesterol can beget heart problems, and even heart failure.

*Hypothyroid and hyperthyroidism are serious afflictions that you want to be sure to diagnose with your doctor and treat immediately.

What Can You Do If You Think You Have Hypo or Hyperthyroidism?

1.  Get Tested

If you believe that you are suffering from an underactive or overactive thyroid, please get tested with your doctor.

You may choose a holistic doctor or a traditional doctor to have your hormone levels tested.

2.  Respect Your Natural Energy Levels

In order to really pick up on what your body is throwing down, try to cut caffeine and sugar from your diet.

CVS Jumping “Off The Bandwagon”?

Did you know that nationwide pharmacy CVS is jumping “off” the tobacco bandwagon?

That’s right: in October of 2014, CVS Pharmacy will STOP selling smokes.

You heard me correctly: ALL tobacco sales – CVS is snuffing them out.

Thomas Frieden, director at the CDC, told Reuters:

“I think CVS recognized that it was just paradoxical to be both a seller of deadly products and a healthcare provider.”

 

While CVS isn’t quite eliminating everything ‘toxic’ from it’s stores, such as candy, OTC drugs, or processed foods…

This is a big step in motivating other pharmacies or grocery store chains to eliminate tobacco sales.

But if you think about it… why does a pharmacy –the very place where people go to find medicine toheal from their sicknesses- sell the very thing that makes people sick?!

Kudos to CVS for staying the course – as their stock value dropped a bit last week in an apparent reaction to this news.

Grassroots movement tries to ban yoga mats and shoe leather from Subway sandwiches…

I couldn’t be more supportive of small, grassroots efforts by writers, researchers, and bloggers to abolish toxic food additives and ingredients regularly consumed by the public.

And every once in a while, I have to share something with you that you may not otherwise see or read unless you’re really tuned into the grassroots movement.

Earlier this week, witnessing the powerful effort by the informational ‘food babe’ website really put a smile on my face.

On February 4th, 2014, the website launched this petition for Subway to abolish a nasty chemical called azodicarbonamide found in Subway sandwiches.  (Let’s call it “AZO” in this article.)

AZO is a plastic chemical that was found in Subway sandwiches’ bread.

You can also find it on the bottom of your shoe… literally.

It’s used in yoga mats and synthetic materials like shoe rubber.  YUCK!

But the signatures aren’t worth a thing if Subway sandwiches doesn’t get rid of the toxic ingredients found in it’s bread.

How Dangerous IS Azodicarbonamide?

Why We’re Scared of Toxic Pacific Fish…

While there’s always been concerns over consuming fish from our polluted oceans, the problem has been magnified following the category 9 tsunami that hit Japan’s coast a few years ago.

In March of 2011, an earthquake in Japan caused a tsunami to hit it’s coast.

This resulted in the meltdown of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant

It also amounted to the worst nuclear catastrophe since Chernobyl.

In order to cool the reactors at Fukushima off, water was poured onto them.

That water eventually seeped back into the ground nearby… and thereby into the Pacific Ocean.

Understandably, people are now feeling a little sheepish about their sashimi…

Overreactions To The Fukushima Pollution…

Radioactive isotopes found in bluefin tuna as well as several other Pacific fish are a serious deal.

In fact, a good friend of mine just literally purchased a Geiger counter to use in our favorite restaurants.

It’s been three whole years since Fukushima’s nuclear meltdown- and it’s probably about that time where we’d see three-headed halibut making it’s way into our fishing nets.

Physicians and health experts are conducting tests to see how radioactive  fish just may be.

But many of these initial tests aren’t showing anything worth the above-mentioned headlines.

Many believe that the death of sea lions that was so popular in the news was actually due to malnutrition.

And the fish with the bleeding gills that you may have read about?

This appears to be caused from a virus the causes hemorrhaging in seabirds.

The Truth About Fukushima Radiation in Pacific Fish…

While water tested at the Fukushima nuclear plant showed almost five times MORE radiation than was originally reported…

There doesn’t appear to have been an equally detrimental effect on wildlife in the area.

There are three radioactive isotopes that are most commonly found in organisms affected by Fukushima.

Strontium-90, Cesium-137 and Cesium-134.

Cesium-137 is considered the deadliest byproduct of nuclear fission from either a power plant or a bomb.

These radioactive isotopes are linked to bone cancer, cancer of nearby tissues, and even leukemia.

Strontium-90 has been found in some tests conducted on Pacific Fish that migrate to the coast of Canada, as well as radioactive Cesium.

But while the highest level of Cesium that is approved for consumption is a level of “100”, the highest level of Cesium that has been shown is actually not in fish – but in the seaweed we use to wrap fish, melt into soups, or crunch as a salty, fishy snack.

That’s right: seaweed has been shown to have elevated Cesium-137 levels in 100% of all samples tested… but not yet enough to stop consuming.

Other fish that have been tested with exceedingly high levels of radiation include anchovies, halibut, mackerel, sardines, cod, shark and monk fish.

What Can We Do To Enjoy Sushi Without Getting Sick?

While government food agencies are supposedly monitoring fish that could be affected by Fukushima pollution and making sure that the public does NOT consume radioactive Pacific fish; many are saying that the industry is too big and the agencies too lax.

Therefore many people have sworn off sushi altogether.

That’s totally okay… my husband is a cancer survivor and I totally agree that it’s better safe than sorry.

However, here’s are a few really fascinating counter-points to consider…

Many writers and researchers who’ve shed light on the Fukushima fallout have noted that you would get 20 TIMES more radiation from eating one banana than from ‘toxic tuna’.

That’s right – bananas have a naturally occurring potassium isotope.

But you don’t hear people talking about radioactive bananas.

Other foods with radioactive elements include potatoes, kidney beans, sunflower seeds, or even Brazil nuts – which have 100 TIMES the radioactivity of “toxic” Pacific Bluefin Tuna.

You’re definitely more likely to obtain radiation from unsuspecting foods like the above, a dental x-ray, or even going through the airport scanners.

What You Really Should Be Worried About In Fish…

It’s pretty easy for journalists, talk radio hosts, new outlets, and bloggers to blow Fukushima Fallout fears… well… ‘out of the water’.

But no matter how you choose to read this article; there IS one nasty toxin we should be worried about in our fish.

It’s mercury.

You know – the red stuff in thermometers that your grandpa probably used to play with like it was silly putty?

It’s caused by power plants and other factories which pepper coastlines worldwide.

The Biodiversity Research Institude says about mercury-laden fish that, “smaller traces of the toxic metal may be enough to cause restricted brain development or other health problems for humans who eat them.”

The National Wildlife Foundation even states that mercury can “adversely alter the neurological and reproductive systems of humans and wildlife.”

About 70 percent of fish contains low levels of mercury; such as cod, salmon, herring and sardines.

At present, fish with the highest mercury content are these:

HIGH MERCURY FISH:

  • Bluefish
  • Grouper
  • Mackerel (Spanish, Gulf)
  • Sea Bass (Chilean)*
  • Tuna (Canned Albacore)
  • Tuna (Yellowfin)*

REALLY HIGH MERCURY FISH:

  • Mackerel (king)
  • Marlin
  • Orange Roughy
  • Shark
  • Swordfish
  • Tilefish
  • Tuna (Bigeye, Ahi)

I’ll keep researching and reading.

But for the time being – I’m much more worried about mercury in fish than radiation.

Which is good, because there’s nothing I love more than a seaweed-wrapped cucumber roll with Wu-Long Tea.

The Most Dangerous Food In America…

Breaking Bread.  Making a toast.  Celebrating a birthday.

Our lives are inundated with sugar in one way or another.

A couple hundred years ago when sugar started to creep into the American diet, people only ate about 2 lbs per year.

Today the average American eats over 150 pounds of sugar per year.

That’s 3 POUNDS of sugar per WEEK!

The average American even consumes more than 40 teaspoons DAILY of sugar.

Imagine setting 40 teaspoons of anything in front of you.

It’s overwhelming… and indeed it’s a scary thought!

Your Brain on Sugar…

When you consume sugar; taste receptors signal different areas of the brain, one being the cerebral cortex.

Your brain rewards you for it and tells you to have more sugar.

The same thing happens when people experience sex or take certain drugs.

That’s why people want more and more of these things and become addicted.

And yes, your brain’s reaction to sugar does lead to sugar addiction.

That’s the reason dieting can be so hard!

Either you aren’t avoiding sugars that sneak into restaurant and processed foods…

Or you’re having legitimate sugar withdrawal!

Your Gut On Sugar…

Your gut has sugar receptors, just like your brain.

When you eat sugar – your gut will actually send a warning up to your brain.

Your brain responds in one of two ways:

1)  You feel full

2)  Your insulin spikes in response to excess sugar.

The more insulin your body releases to process sugar, the more we store sugar as fat.

The insulin is meant to regulate blood sugar.

Abusing your body’s insulin response can actually cause your body to become resistant to insulin; thereby unable to regulate blood sugar.

This isn’t just a way to store excess body fat, but it’s dangerous for your overall health and wellness.

The Not-So-Sweet Side of Sugar…

Eating sugar is unique in your brain.

You see, when you eat broccoli, you don’t get the same reaction in your brain as you do when you consume sugar.

What makes sugar ‘feel’ so good?

The answer is dopamine.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that makes you feel good.

Dopamine is released when we consume alcohol, nicotine, heroine, and sugar.

That’s one of the reasons people become addicted to one or all of the above.

How Your Brain Regulates Nutrition…

Just because dopamine is associated with all of the above-mentioned ‘risky’ business doesn’t mean that dopamine is inherently bad.

In fact, dopamine can help you be MORE nutritious.

That’s because when you eat the same thing over and over, you don’t react with as much dopamine.

This causes our bodies to constantly seek new foods and different tastes.

Food and drink variety begets more dopamine; which causes us to try new foods and have more balanced nutrition.

How We Can Become Addicted to Sugar?

When you eat sugary foods, dopamine doesn’t level out like it does with normal foods.

When you eat sugar, the reward in your brain persists.

That’s how people get addicted to sugar – you keep eating it and it keeps feeling good!
